9 week old puppy, first night - Sickness & Diarrhea

Hi there,

Was wondering if anybody could help us, we're having a few prolems with our 9 week old Cairn.

It is his first day with us today & he hasnt ate very much and has been sick once which was FIRM but had three lots of squirty diarrhea.

He is drinking normally, but doesnt seem to like the food that the breeder has been feeding him on, apparently. (IYAMS Puppy)

We know that it could be just nerves & upset with the new surroudings & smells etc but we dont know what to do really as we are new to having a Cairn.

Should we feed him tomorrow or just give him water? or should we take him straight to the vets in the morning?

He is sleeping alot too, is that normal or should we just be greatfull? He seems very content with himself & very playfull however could it be that he is just exhausted?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

When you say "sick" do you mean vomiting? If he is vomiting, is lethargic (as you seemed to describe), has diarrhea and is not interested in food, he could be ill. Puppies can become dehydrated very quickly. I would take him to a vet ASAP for evaluation.

Please keep us posted.

We went through something slightly similar with Murphy when we brough him home. The only difference was that he did NOT have the diarrhea or vomiting. He did refuse to eat a few meals, and he slept more than I thought should be normal.

We picked him up on a holiday weekend and had an early Mon am vet appointment.

Our vet (he was old school, in practice for over 40 years) giggled at us and told us to enjoy the quiet as it won't last long. He was right! It was spazoid Cairn about a week after we got him, and 10 months later, he's still a spaz!

Obviously, getting him to the vet straight away will ease your mind, and you'll be certain that he is healthy.

We had a couple of issues with our puppy, she is 9 weeks old today...... Dixie ate good but had loose stools she also got a shot and the vet gave her Albon for a little while, she weighed 1 lb 13 oz when we got her I bet she weighs 3 lbs or more now............The first 6 days she pooped in her crate at nite but hasn't had an accident in over a week now she is such a sweet puppy and is such a good girl...............She eats so good but I would like to get her on some better food soon, the breeder had her on Iams puppy food .... .......so soon we will start to add a better brand of food.

I'm so glad your puppy is feeling better... It took a few days for Dixie to settle in but now she thinks she owns the place..Good luck and keep us updated..

So glad everyone is on the mend. Tummy upsets are not uncommon in such young pups, but it's important to get them to the vet because they can dehydrate and fade so quickly.

Please try not to worry too much. When my girls were puppies, my littlest one had the same problems when we brought her home. Had red blood in her stool, the good news is if it's red it's a little less serious than if it is black and tar like. It could be caused from so many things from straining, to upset stomach issues. For us it was a food problem and a sensitive eater issue. To this day she's a little bit more fragile eating wise than my other one.

I know this option isn't for everyone, but we that's the reason we started feeing raw medallions (nature's variety) and putting a teaspooon of raw canned uncooked pupmkin in their meals, it improved the poop immediately. No more blood, no more diaherrea. Our vets too suggested everything under the sun, a chicken and rice diet, prescription dog foods - none of it worked for us. We took a chance on raw at 9 weeks and have been feeding it for breakfast every morning. They still get canned at night, but they have such sensitivity issues with food that kibble was not an option because it digests much slower.

It will get better, I remember those days of being so scared too that we had a super big illness and our little doggie had problems. Hang in there and keep us posted.

I am very glad he is okay, I worry a bit when I hear a young pup is going home with their new family.

Any of you waiting for your puppy, don't rush picking them up at 8 weeks. 10-12 weeks is really a better age for the pups to leave the nest :soap: Now that is just me on my soap box so to speak.

It really is nice to hear so many wonderful homes have been found for the Cairn puppies!

Well glad Arthur better. Hopefully he will continue to thrive and demonstrate that your care can overcome puppy farm start to life!

I am just down the M1 from you. Good to have more British members posting on Forum!
