ppipho
My poor puppy got attacked by the neighbor's Rottweiller. We were in our backyard on a leash and the neighbors let their dog out and he came under their fence like a bullet and went right for Charlie's throat. The neighbors did not even realize what was happening and we had to beat the rottweiller off with a pice of wood from the firepit. It was absolutely awful!! He has been stiched up but it was a very bad situation. 911 was called but the neighbors left right after it happened and the police haven't been able to make contact with them yet. It just makes me so furious. Poor Charlie was so frightened, but the neighbor behind me witnessed the whole thing and was able to give the police an account of the attack and he described it as a 'viscous attack totally unprovoked'. While I hate to see anyone lose a beloved pet, our city has regulations that you cannot keep a dangerous dog in a residential area. While talking to other neighbors I have found this dog has attacked other dogs, although not to the extent of what happened to poor Charlie. Hopefully something will happen soon. I guess I would even settle for them making sure their fence was secure... I ended up with an extremely large emergency vet bill which I hope to get reimbursed for by the neighbors and I need to take him in tomorrow to get the drainage tube removed.. I have attached a picture, but the picture really does not show the full extent of the injury--he has 4 large lacerations and his whole neck is bruised. He will need a good grooming after his stiched come out in 10 days or so to blend in the damage to his coat :-) You sure realize how much you love those little dogs when something like this happens! Idaho Cairns
If your neighbor owns his/her home, chances are that they have homeowners insurance and that insurance will most certainly reimburse you for the vet bills incurred in this incident. Further, were this my dog, I would sue for punitive damages as well--the neighbor's insurance company will make sure the Rotty is no longer a problem for you. Get past your concern for the feelings of the neighbor about his/her dog, an animal that attacks another dog, unprovoked, has no business in a community. Is that a shunt I see coming out of your dog's neck? This injury must be hard for your dog and you to bear--a terrible thing.

pkcrossley
this is infuriating and one can be thankful only that charlie is alive and recovering. i agree that the first objective is just to make other people safe from this dog --not to kill the dog-- but the owners are clearly not responsible and this is probably one of those situations in which the dog will end up paying the price for the owners' sins. in most places you would be well within the normal scope of the law to take them to court for the cost of charlie's care (as well as your legal expenses for taking them to court). TazTalk
How sad! I wish Charlie a quick recovery. Rotties have always scared me for this reason. I have heard from friends that some insurance companies will not insure your property if you have one of them ... not sure if that's correct or not. Give Charlie lots of love - we are pulling for him!
tlwtheq
I'm so sorry for your family! Here's hoping the owners of the Rottie own up to their responsibility, and that Charlie recovers quickly. The Wilk Pack Max and Nelly
Puddlesmama
Get well soon lil cutie I agree that that dog has no business being in a community either. Rotties are beautiful dogs.. Some of the best natured dogs I know are rotties. It is the owners who bears this responsibility. When a dog is not socialized this is the kind of thing that can happen. People get a dog like that for status and nothing more. It is really sad. I do feel sorry for the rottie..But it is safe to say..It is too late for him now he will have to pay for his owners mistakes dearly I LOVE MY CAIRNS PUDDLES AND IRIS! cairnsby3
I can only say stay after it, a friend of mine had her dog attacked and after the man got rid of the dog, animal control seemed to think that was good enough. She wants her vet bills paid and a ticket issued to the dog owner at the least. She is staying in touch with the Attorney General's office. Kathryn
Hi from another Minnesotan. Allie, TBone and I all send our thoughts to Charlie, with hopes that he recovers quickly and fully. Please do be sure to file a report with your local police about this incident (just call your local station) to ensure Charlie's safety in the future as well as that of other dogs. There are no "breed specific" laws in this state, but there are certainly laws against aggressive attacking dogs. You should expect to have your vet bills paid in full. If your neighbors balk at this, you can take them to conciliation court. If you need to know how, plese contact me off line and I'll explain what you need to do. Hopefully -- since you and Charlie have already gone through way too much -- your neighbors will either fully control or get rid of their dog, and you will face no financial losses from this experience. I can imagine how strong your heartbreak is...I would still be shaking.

Fudgie
I am so sorry for Charlie and you. I hope he recovers soon and hoping for not much pain. So sad for him and you. And hoping the neighbors have to take full responsibility for what happened I am also not against the suing (if you don't get reimbursed) for what is right. My son rides a battery powered scooter and we always worry about a dog attacking the wheels of the cart and then him. But you can't stay inside all of the time. There are leash laws for a reason and we have reminded the city of that. Laws and ordinances are no good unless enforced regularly. Which includes loose dogs. The city should take some responsibility also for not enforcing the laws in the first place in order to discourage letting dogs run loose. I hope Charlie heals soon and gets back to normal. Poor little baby!
Nikki
aww I am soo sorry about charlie! I hope he heals quickly! we will pray for him! the owner should pay for your vet bills and probably should put the dog to sleep. if the police don't ticket the owner contact your humane society or animal controls they usually will fine them. I really hope your the owner puts the rotty to sleep I would be worried that he would attack a child if he was out loose. Angel and I went through something similar a year ago but the dog didn't go for the throat! our attack wasn't as severe as yours; the dog went for angel stomach I didn't even see him coming we were walking upstairs coming back from our walk. luckily for me the owner came out right away and pulled the dog off. because of this I always carry either a taser or a maglight on our walks. a few days later that stupid owner asked me where the dog park was???!!! I told him he was going to have to look that up himself b/c there was no way I was telling him his dog was severely aggressive and attacked unprovoked. Angel never became afraid of dogs after that though she would do her lil bark and hide behind me every time she saw him or heard that dog. luckily that guy moved so we don't have to deal with his crazy dog anymore! Dogs' lives are too short. Their only fault, really." - Carlotta Monterey O'Neill

Kramersmom
Oh my goodness! I saw little Charlie's photo of his injury's and that is just awful and you need to get this dog out. I'm a dog/animal lover. I will stop for an animal on the road faster than for a human, but, when a dog attacks so viciously like that, it has no business being near humans/animals. Yes, it will most likely be put down but if Charlie was my pet I could care less about the Rotti. Look what that dog did to Charlie, that is awful and I have no pity for the Rott. Sorry if some don't agree, there are Rotti's who are well trained but was your neighbor one that walks the dog with a stick and beats it? If so they need to be locked up too. I'm so against this and when a dog can do such horrific damage like he did to Charlie, I have no pity. I feel for little Charlie and pray he has no after effects of his attack. Please keep us updated and let us know how Charlie is recovering. Right now the one and only thing is to be grateful for is that Charlie is a live with such an attack. Get those people to pay your bills. If it was me I would get them to pay but if not be thankful Charlie is a live that he didn't die, but, get those people and dog out of your neighborhood! I wouldn't want neighbors like that and too walk away. What a shame. Give Charlie a quick recovery hug for me. Scruffys Mom
I know how you feel. A neighbors Pit attacked Scruffy a year ago. Being with a rescue, I save dogs, not destroy them. I was forgiving and demanded obedience training and did not press charges. WRONG decision. The Pit attacked us the following week. Scruffy is now aggressive and Sparky, who was there, but not attacked is fearful. I made the owners surrender the dog and have learned to be very protective of my pack and my wallet. Healing prayers for you and yours.
