I personally wouldn't buy it. The second ingredient is chicen by product meal which means all the stuff they can't use in anything else, then the third is corn meal. Not so great for dogs. The first ingredient is chicken, but once you remove all the water, it's really not the main, first ingredient you know? Pretty much what your dog is going to eat is filllers with the sorghum, rice and beet pulp with corn being the pretty much the main ingredient. This is very little actual meat in this.

Why not switch to something a little better quality, and in the long run it will pay off. Although, at first it's more expensive, the better quality foods last longer and are better for your dog.

I would never feed Iams to any pet. My sister had a cat she fed Iams to and is convinced the food contributed to the horrific, extended diseases/death the animal suffered. If you need another reason see this http://www.iamscruelty.com/introduction.asp. Just my thoughts on the subject due to watching my sis still suffer guilt from what that poor cat went through. Good luck on your dog food search!

I feed my 10 month old femanle Cairn (and 5 year old Black Lab) alternating bags of Orijen 6 fresh fish and Acana Pacifica. They get a few tablespoons of Wellness wet thrown in as a treat.

I might give Horizon Legacy a try this summer and see if they like it, but I'm very happy with what they are eating at the moment.

Right now Louie gets Taste of the Wild Salmon recipe. Its called Pacific stream or something. He then gets a spoon of Merrick wet mixed in.

Shrake2,

You're going to want to feed what the beeder is giving the puppy at first. When you switch foods, you have to do it slowly.

When I got my boys, they were on Eukenba small breed puppy, I wasn't fond of the food- but left them on it for awhile then switched them over after they had been in our home for a few months- I wanted them to get used to our house before I made a food change.

I had to laugh when I read that comment.

You'll be buying plenty of toys because as we all know, they NEVER last with a Cairn around..lol

My Cairn's favourite toy (her name is Pebbles) is unrolled toilet paper. She grabs it and runs down the hall, unrolling the whole roll.

But I digress; switching gradually to new food is best done (I was told by one of our on staff vets) in the following manner.

Day 1 100% Old food

Day 2 90% Old food/10% New food

Day 3 80% Old food/20% New food

Day 9 20% Old food/80% New food

Day 10 10% Old food/90% New food

Day 11 100% New food

The numbers are widely open to variation by individual vet, but gradual is a good idea, and switching to a good quality food as soon as you can is also a good idea.

If possible, go to a zero grain dog food with named proteins. www.dogfoodanalysis.com is a very good site. You won't go wrong with any of the 6 or 5 star rated dry dog foods. For wet food, my googs get Wellness 95% Salmon, Venison, or Turkey or Go Natural Fresh Water Trout. Also, any wet food by Merrick is pretty darn good.

Here is a link for Orijen 6 fresh fish http://www.orijen.ca/orijen/products/ORIJEN6fish.aspx

Here is a link for Acana Pacifica http://www.championpetfoods.com/acana/show...formulation=pfd

Both of the previous 2 are made by Champion Pet Foods in Canada from locally sourced products and aside from being goods foods are also good for allergic type dogs.

Lastly, here is a link for Horizon Legacy dog food

http://www.horizonpetfood.com/Products/dog_legacy.html

All of the dry foods I've mentioned are very high in protein, and might not be suitable for large dogs or those with kidney problems. But my 14 lb Cairn and 40 lb Black Lab are thriving.

Tom

As an aside, an added benefit with nutrient dense foods such as these is small firm dense poops (ahem). very easy to clean up.

We use http://www.solidgoldhealth.com/products/

You can get it at Petco. Any of the Solid Gold products are very safe.

Aurora 5000,

I'm with you on the Solid Gold thing. Our cat Daisy wont eat anything except Solid Gold. After I stopped feeding Zen my home made food I switched

him to Solid Gold Wet and Dry. I feel it is a company that can be trusted.
