just took redmon to the vet for vaccinations, there was the cutest, absolutely cutest female westie there. redmon was interested in meeting her and the woman said how cute they are together. i said, they're related... she perked up and said, all confidence, i know! cairns are brown westies!

okay

i guess westie people are rewriting history now.

Well, when I was walking Holly in local country park a couple with a Westie said to me "I have never seen a brown westie before!"

I replied very politely - that a] she was not a Westie but a Cairn and therefore much better! and b] she was not brown but red brindle!

so people need correcting on both sides of Atlantic................................

Well, when people ask what type of dogs mine are I say Cairn terriers. If they still look at me with puzzled faces I tell them, "they are coloured Westies." That seems to satisfy them. I used to go into a longer explanation, but got bored explaining their history properly after a while! If I am feeling in the mood I say, " they are coloured Westies, I didn't want a dog that looked dirty all the time."

I got my cairns like I was buying a car...there are certain colors that don't show dirt. So when we get our cairns in these many, many different colors..they don't show dirt? Right? Just kidding..love all the comments. "Colored Westies...love it!"

LOL

If it hadn't happend to me also, I don't think i'd be laughing as hard as I am right now.

Yes, I was once asked in the waiting room of my vets office.... what are they? Dirty Westies? This by a German Shepherd breeder.... Poor Mettwurst my creme brindle....who in his younger days was more creme then brindle....LOL

I'm still amazed at the chameleon like way that Cairns change color. Renny tends to go blonde in the summer, but turns more silver/gray in the winter. As the weather warms up this year, I'm seeing signs of a definite reddish collor starting to show through. Maybe he'll be a redhead instead of a blond this summer.

As I've said before, if somebody asks what color my dog is, I almost have to look at him before answering.

When my husband and I took Murphy, our dark brindle Cairn, and Gracie, our black Lab, to "Bark for Life" last week, we were surprised at how many people recognized he was a Cairn. Cairns are relatively rare here in the Texas Hill Country. Some comments we overheard:

"Oh, what a cute Cairn!"

"Mom, look! It's a Toto dog!"

"What an adorable Karen!" (oh, well, it is Texas and most of our one syllable words are stretched into two)

Interestingly enough, we DID see a Westie-Cairn cross who was completely white. The owner said pointed at Murphy and exclaimed, "Oh, look, it's your cousin!" She was adorable and looked more Cairn than Westie.

Hagar, I have heard the coat can change colors but I still thought I was imagining things. Murphy also is definitely showing more red as summer approaches. He is normally dark gray/silver with a hint of red.

I went to country park again this afternoion and met a gentleman with two lovely dogs - I said "oh, they are Jack Russells" - no he said they are "Parson Jack Russells - have longer legs" - so it is not just Cairns that get mistaken! He says that is quite a common mistake but his have better temperments than the ordinary Jack Russell. One of his has had reserve at Crufts last year!

Anyhow, he knew Holly was a Cairn and asked if she had been shown - when I said yes - he said you could tell by way she stood! So that was nice.

I told him about the "brown westie" and he laughed - he said many people get Westies because they think they are small and easy to look after but personally he would have gone for a Cairn [if he did not have the Parsons] as they have better personalities!

I do find that you have some interesting conversations with owners when your dog goes to say hello to other dogs!

Since Cairns and Westies are so similar, I wonder how many hobby breeders will breed a Cairn with a Westie and sell the white ones as Westies and the colored ones as Cairns?

Unfortunately, I think we were dooped and got Brody from a BYB. We answered an ad in the newspaper and it sounded good to us. According to what we were told Brody is 3/4 Cairn and 1/4 Westie. He looks mostly Cairn except for a little white patch on his chest. We're paying for it now with all of his leg problems....

We just look at it that we are thankful we got him and not someone that would put him down... But we definately learned our lesson.

i'm thinking that cute mix is not a westie --the shelter must have thought is was one of those "brown westie" deals. i'm feeling that is actually a cairn mix.
