Puddlesmama
No..I dont think you should smack the dog ever really I have found when my lil ones were in potty training, and they made an accident..That i should smack myself Make sure she goes out every 15 to 30 minutes.. Throw the biggest party outside when she does any business complete with treats and party favors. When she does potty in the house..immediatly remove her and put her outside. Being consistant is the key to training. If you dont use an enzyme cleaner to clean up messes she can maybe still smell where she had an "accident" before and think it is ok to do it again. Keep her crated when you cannot be with her constantly..and when you can, tether her to a leash when indoors so you can keep a constant eye on her. At the first sign of sniffing the ground, walking in circle etc...get her out..and throw a party for her when she goes. She has no essence of time...She has no idea she is about to go pee, until she squats at this age.. Never smack her for doing what comes natural.. I bet, If you remain consistant and keep a watchful eye on her.. Within 2 weeks she will be getting it...Patience.. Good luck I LOVE MY CAIRNS PUDDLES AND IRIS! SparkyJonesMom
Tie a bell to a long piece of yarn or something like that, and hang it on the doorknob of the door you use to take your puppy out to do their business (you should always use the same door so as not to confuse the pup). Every time you take the puppy outside, take her paw and make her swipe the bell and ring it. Then when she does her business outside, praise her A LOT and maybe give her a treat. Make her ring the bell EVERY SINGLE TIME you take her outside to go potty. Pretty soon she'll realize that ringing that bell gets her out of the house, and she'll know that if she has to go potty, she should ring it. I think it took my Cairn about 3 days to figure it out. Of course, he still had accidents every now and then, but that's just something to be expected with a puppy. For the most part, they will get the hang of peeing outside after ringing the bell. Angieh
I am at the tail end of potty training my second Cairn. We had to take her out every twenty to thirty minutes and keep a constant eye on her. When she went potty outside we told her good girl and gave her a treat. When she went to the bathroom inside (if we caught her in the act) we made a loud noise to startle her and took her outside to finish her business. It didn't take either of my dogs long to figure out that going potty outside would result in a treat and going potty inside resulted in nothing. We did this same process for our first Cairn. Cairns are pretty easy to potty train because they are smart and want to please us. It won't be fun going out every twenty minutes or so, but it will be worth it.
