Seen this survey on People.com - I personally think I'd love to see a Cairn in the white house... but I guess I'm pretty partial to the breed....

What type of hypoallergenic dog should the Obamas adopt?

Bichon Frise

35%

Poodle

9%

Cairn terrier (like Toto in The Wizard of Oz)

38%

Greyhound

Hollie Edelbrock & Brystal Sonoma
Chris, Stacy and Little Noah

woo go cairns! not many people know about cairn terriers! they would if the obamas did.

If it's a Cairn, do you think we could get the new Prez to join the Forum?? I'm sure we all have some ideas we would like to share with him, maybe even some about Cairns! :D

Be careful what you wish for. Nothing will ruin a breed quicker than popularity.

I think a good first dog (First Dog:lol:) for two growing girls would be a standard Poodle.

George

I just voted. Maybe they will see this poll and go with it...

I'm with George, although I momentarily wavered when I read an article today that mentioned that the Secret Service code names for the girls were Radiance and Rosebud (how cute is that?). We had a Cairn named Rosebud and she too was cute as a button.

A presidential Cairn would probably also *finally* give a point of reference other than the Wizard of Oz when trying to explain to people what kind of dog we have. At this point, worldwide, a reference to the President-elect would potentially be more universally recognized than a reference to the Wizard of Oz.

But mostly, I'm with George.

No way..Not in a millon years.

Its just you see how dogs with stature seem to run amuck in shelters for years after a dog is "headlined" I volunteer at my local humane society and it gets bad..It would break my heart to see Cairns Become over bred and be subjected to that. Plus you all know it take only special people like us to own one :)

I LOVE MY CAIRNS PUDDLES AND IRIS!

I can't agree anymore than what was stated in the post above mine. It takes special people like us to own one Agree 110% wont say anymore.

They should get a Bichon.

And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are" Missy Rainbow Bridge Memorial

I agree on both points & also won't comment on the "qualifications" for owning a Cairn (or Terrierists in general). I will definitely, strongly agree that the popularity increase it would cause the breed would be disastrous! I saw where the AKC is promoting a couple of rescue mini poodles. I think that would be a wonderful idea. If there is a spike in dog ownership because of what the Obama's do I can't think of anything better than raising awareness for rescue organizations in general.

You know that the current Presidental dogs are Scottys...if I recall several Presidents have owned Scottys... So a Cairn would not be a far stretch... I'm sure the other Terrorist's have broken in the residence... Anyone see the TV footage of Barney biting a reporter!

On a side note, I saw an interview with the Obama's and the girls wanted a smaller dog and Dad said "no small dogs".

lol i saw that Barney bit the reporter but he kinda stuck his hand in his face...

I notice on the BBC report of Obama's news conference that he stated the type of dog to get was a"big issue"!!

Holly..And in a way I am very glad...I hope he rescues a dog or finds himself a nice shelter puppy. Because it will open millions of eyes as to the state of overpopulation in shelters and rescues in the US and across the world. Thats why I am reserved about the family getting a Cairn.. Even if he was to go to a reputable breeder..Most that would want one wont follow in the footsteps of rescue, Mill or shelter. More and more puppymills would pump out Cairns to keep up with the public demands and more would end up in shelters across the US.

this may as well be the first positive change we see from Barack. I say he adopt a shelter puppy/dog. Lead many people to adopt wonderful dogs even worthy for the whitehouse. and hopefully things will start changing for the betterment of all the poor babies being euthenized on a daily basis.

I too agree with George. But never fear all Cairns are independent, self assurred, self reliant Republicans.

I couldnt agree more, and there are a variety of reasons I wouldnt want a cairn in the white house! :crybaby:

I think they should get a poodle.

george: i never thought of it that way! :P

...not a Cairn puppy...maybe an older one.

No...make it a poodle. :ermm:

I don't think the president would have enough time to keep up with a Cairn. I bet there are a lot of places a little Cairn can get into in the White House.

I do agree though, overpopulation may become an issue.
