Posted November 3, 200816 yr Here in NZ we celebrate the British Guy Fawkes Night and like most pet owners, I'm dreading it as fireworks will be exploding all around us. Unlike all the other dogs I know, my Cairn Fergus isn't terrified of the bangs and flashes, he just wants to get out there and challenge them all! I'll keep him locked inside, but as we live in a converted dancehall with 20ft high ceilings and a wooden floor, his barking will be horrendously loud I'd stick cotton wool in his ears to deafen the sound, but knowing Fergus, he'd somehow manage to eat it! Oh well, think of us on the 5th with the hatches battened down and a bottle of Scotch to steady my nerves Veni, vidi, velcro - I came, I saw, I stuck around
November 3, 200816 yr Well, we had some fireworks on Saturday evening - Holly did not bark or anything just sat and shivered like a jelly! So put TV on loud and sat in lounge with doors shut and then she seemed to settle. Holly was not keen on going outside to do a wee though when bangs were going off! So not sure what is will be like on the 5th itself! Hoping it rains so that it restricts them but then they will onyl let them off on the first dry night! www.cairnterriertalk.co.uk
November 3, 200816 yr boy do I feel stupid-I never even heard of that and have no clue what it is-all I know is (not with Misty or Toby) but the one before scruffy use to be terrified of fieworks on the fouth of July. we dreaded the week before that day and night a few days after. I had to literaly drag him out to go pee and I didnt dare leave his side I had to coax him through the whole process. a real pain. and for almost a week he refused to come out from under the bed honly to eat and go potty, It was an expected event every year his wole 15years of life-poor guy.
November 4, 200816 yr Skipper is like Fergus, no fear, just a lot of challenge barking. If I were to let him out he would head in the direction of the fireworks. The same thing with thunderstorms. He will go to West door then as storm passes overhead he will go to East door barking away. Maybe somehow he thinks he chased the thunder off. Happy Guy Fawkes night Sheila Guy Fawkes Night (also known as Bonfire Night, Cracker Night, Fireworks Night) is an annual celebration on the evening of the 5th of November. It celebrates the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot of the 5th of November 1605 in which a number of Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London, England Edited November 4, 200816 yr by boats85
November 4, 200816 yr Hi there, as you know I'm in NZ too ... well, I went to our vet last week and asked if there was anything, anything! I could give our labrador as she gets VERY stressed by the fireworks (our Cairn doesn't seem too bothered so far) and there is - it's called D.A.P and it comes in two forms, one is a plug-in for a room, & the other is a spray that comes with a cute bandanna your dog wears - you spray the D.A.P on the bandanna every 1.5-2 hours. There's some more info about this andother options here: http://www.petvet.co.nz/news.cfm?content_id=142 and here: http://vetmedicine.about.com/cs/behavior/a...ehaviorprob.htm It's not cheap mind...i got the spray - $60! November 5, 200816 yr Well I have discovered that Holly does not like fireworks. This evening they are going off all around us and poor Holly won't even go outside for a wee! She stands in door - hears a bang = runs back inside and sits and shivers. So sit in lounge with TV on loud, doors closed and she lies next to me but will not settle! So hope it quietens down shortly so she will go out to wee before we go to bed. Next year will get something for her! www.cairnterriertalk.co.uk
November 5, 200816 yr Hi - update - the D.A.P spray seems to work pretty well actually. We had two semi-settled dogs last night which is really quite an achievement on Guy Fawkes night. Neither was asleep, which they would normally be, but also neither was barking or whining or anxious. There was a little pacing and trying to move curtains aside to get a peek out there, but that's it. I highly recommend this product. Also, the price may seem high but we used around 1/8 of the bottle only and it doesn't expire for another 2 years..... Edited November 5, 200816 yr by Emmadilemma
November 5, 200816 yr Will have to get that for next time. In meantime, poor soul obviously wants to go out for wee but won't move from door or goes out, won't stop as there is a bang, and gallops back in! Expecting an accident indoors! But will try her again in a bit outside! www.cairnterriertalk.co.uk
