September 30, 200816 yr Well bless your heart for bringing Mickey into your life. I have found over the last three months that owning two dogs is twice the work, and five times the fun!
September 30, 200816 yr Author Thanks Chris! You've been an inspiration, I have to admit! Shelley, Angus and Mickey in Seattle
September 30, 200816 yr How lucky did Mickey get? That is wonderful you adopted him, now he can have a beautiful, fun life. The photo is adorable. They look like brothers. September 30, 200816 yr Congratulations on the newest member of your family. The boys are beautiful! Angus looks very happy in that picture. I guess my only advice would be not to coddle Mickey or baby him when he's feeling anxious, or you might reinforce that behavior. Try to do activities that boost his confidence, and I'm sure he'll be feeling right at home before you know it. I'm so happy for Mickey!
September 30, 200816 yr Author thanks guys! His whining has pretty much stopped with the exception of a little separation anxiety when DH or I leave. I'm going to post this in another thread BUT - I knew his skin wasn't in very good shape after giving him a bath, but last night when we took the harness off, he was rubbed raw! It was definitely not on too tight and it's exactly the same type and brand that we use for Angus and he's never had any trouble. We felt SO bad! He wasn't even complaining! We have an appointment with the vet tomorrow, so hopefully we will be able to figure out why it happened. Better food will help too, I'm sure. Shelley, Angus and Mickey in Seattle
September 30, 200816 yr Congratulations!! that is wonderful you rescued a sweet angel!!! best of luck!!
October 1, 200816 yr There is something just so special about having two cairns. My wife and I had one male, Watson, for five years, then we got another male, Bailey, and they were together for ten years before we lost Watson to natural causes at age 15. Bailey lived for another four years and we recently lost him to cancer a couple of months ago. It really broke out hearts. Anyway, the good news was that those were some of the happiest years of our lives, especially when they were around each other. A previous poster hit the nail exactly on the head - it's twice as much work but it's at least five times more fun. You are in for some real special times. Just be sure to enjoy each moment as much as you can. The only downside is that it is so devastating when they are both gone. At least you have many years before that it is likely to be the case. The only issues we had were eating and and going for walks. Since they were both unaltered, I took them for their (three times a day) walks separately. Otherwise they would tend to get into it over the best sniffing "spots". As for food, Watson didn't mind Bailey eating eating out of his (Watson's) dish but Bailey really objected to Watson eating out of his dish. Wheh they occasionally got into scuffles, I would get behind Bailey and quickly scoop him up and put him into another room with me and close the door. Within about 10 seconds he would "shake off". I would then let him back out and everything would be fine. Anyway, congratulations and enjoy then both in good health! Charles Morrison
October 1, 200816 yr I'm so happy for your family! With three Cairns in our household we're always on our toes...and now we have a rescue kitty in the mix. Lots of work but loads of fun and happy times. Max and Nelly
October 1, 200816 yr Congrats on your new Cairn! Mickey is quite lucky indeed, love the picture! I wish I had advice but I've only had one dog at a time, though I'm hoping to change that this time around! <3Oscar
October 1, 200816 yr right now with two cairns Im off my usual schedual somewhat and Misty has been very helpfull with right and wrong and showing him what is expected-shes a good teacher so far I think in the long run two cairns will be easier than one -once the new one can be trusted loose while away . after teething time I think it will be possible- lots of luck patience and fun Each time I see a positive sink in to his little furbrain..the more Im glad I got him. Misty is definately happier with someone to look after. and has become less needy of our attention-which-leads us to more free time!
October 2, 200816 yr Congrats on your new addition. I love a good story. I too am adding a second Cairn to my home. My rescue will be flying into New Orleans on the 10th. I'm so excited to get her. Once again, congrats on the new baby.
October 2, 200816 yr From experience with dogs that have been crate trained as puppies, i've found that they view the crate at a security place. While Mett & Bratt haven't actually been locked in the crate since they were little we have left it open in the Kitchen for them (door has been removed). They boys will go to the crate if they get freaked out or if it storms out. It's very possible that you new dog is going through crate withdrawal and you might want to get your crate out and up it up for him, you can take the door off like we did, just leave it as a place for him to go to when he becomes overwhelmled. October 2, 200816 yr Author That's a great idea Tracy. Thank you! And thanks to all for the links to the different harnesses. We will have to try another style. He is actually doing much better. The two of them bark more than Angus did while he was an only dog. They seem to take turns being the instigator. I think they're trying to prove to each other that they can protect us. Turtlepeace, that's wonderful!! Make sure to post pictures when she gets home! Did you get her through Colonel Potter? If so, which one is she? I practically have their available cairns memorized! LOL Charles, I'm so sorry to hear you've lost both your boys. I know you could never replace them, but I hope that your being on this Forum means you're looking into adopting another one. October 3, 200816 yr Hi Shelley, Speaking of settling.....how is the new city? Have you found your favorite vet, pet store, groomer and friends? You'll love having 2 cairns. I've found 2 are easier than one. They keep themselves entertained. Congratulations on your new addition! Greg P Greg and Val Perry Home of Kula RN CGC, Am. Can. Int'l. October 4, 200816 yr Author Hi Greg. We're still finding our favorites. Living in the city without a lot of big box stores, we're a bit out of our element! Dallas was full of them. We found a great doggie day care and both guys are registered now. We've tried 2 different vets (couldn't get Mickey into the other one quickly and he needed a Bordetella shot for daycare). I think we'll stick with the 2nd one. We tried a groomer and I think she'll be fine too. Finding new friends, though, is the hardest part of moving. Shelley, Angus and Mickey in Seattle
