So my neighbors initially had 2 dogs (bassett & pomeranian). My backyard is fenced w/ chain link. They asked me several months ago if they could attach their fence to mine-being a good neighbor I said sure. They now have the original 2 dogs and have added another pomernaian and a corgi for a total of 4 (2 over the limit according to the city ordinances). Now I cannot put my 2 dogs out w/o those 4 crazy dogs barking at them. Cuts the play time in the backyard rather short. I was being stubborn and staying out there ignoring the barking and the neighbors would get mad and bring their dogs in all the while complaining about my dogs, who NEVER barked back. 2 months have gone by and now Kooper is starting to bark back at them, so I'm constantly working on no barking w/ him....I hate to spend the $$ to put up a privacy fence on 1 side of my yard since it is already fenced and secured...what a pain. I've suggested they pay half and they said no! I have a 1 acre yard and this just irks me to no end! Any ideas for getting Kooper to not join in the barking fiesta?

You could try an ultrasonic device pointed in the neighbors direction to try and quiet their dogs down. This is one example - you don't have to get them online, I've seen this same one - and others - at PetSmart for instance:

We have two, one hanging on each of the two 'noisiest' fencelines.

It works best with our youngest dog (4). She immediately whipped around and stopped when she first experienced it. The next day she spotted the "new thing" in the backyard and ran over to bark at it (as is the duty of all Cairns) and boy was she surprised when it barked back. Quieted her right down.

On the other hand, our older male (13) either doesn't care about it, or is hard of hearing, or both :-)

I will say that while it does not work perfectly (as in all barking ceases, permanently) we do believe it has *substantially* reduced the endless "sport barking" and "team barking" that used to take place. I think it's a net plus, worth it for us, but not a perfect solution. We still occasionally have to give them the Evil Eye, a "shush" out the patio door, or a half-hearted rattle of the shake can.

Hmm, I am having a similar situation here at home. Neither of my dogs barked, but since I have moved here it has slowly started to happen. I have 3 dachunds across the alley that are insane with the barking and my dogs are starting to take the que from them. One of the weiners is a total wild child. They actually tie him to a short length of 4x4 post that he drags around their fenced yard. Otherwise they would never be able to catch him when needed.

Thank you Brad, I will try an ultrasonic device. hopefully they are weatherproof, lots of snow in Minnesota in the winter and it's been rainy lately.
