Posted September 24, 200816 yr He nailed bush and post. Trees, hydrants, rocks and grass clumps were all fair game. Right leg up, left leg up, he hit every target with deadly accuracy. He owned the neighborhood tonight. Yes, truly an all star performance on our evening 3 mile walk. Kona markred 66 times as we made the rounds tonight. That's 22 marks/mile. The only stat I don't know is how many cups of pee. How DO they keep going???? Greg and Val Perry Home of Kula RN CGC, Am. Can. Int'l. CH Cairngorm Coffee Tea or Me RA ME EE2/Can. September 24, 200816 yr Does Kona actually have "ammunition" the whole way, or is he just going through the motions after awhile? LOL My Corgi is usually "empty" after the first quarter mile, but insists on "pretending" at every mailbox, tree, blade of grass for the whole 2 miles.
September 24, 200816 yr Author Oh yeah, no dry leg lifts. Those drops are left. Think of the extra exercise. Now, I don't wait for him. I walk at a very brisk pace. He's often at the end of a 6 lead. He stops, lifts and if he's still there when the lead goes tight, he bounds past me and does it again. If I wait he'll spend a minute kicking the grass. And what about those leg kicks? 38 of of the 66 happened in the about first mile. Greg and Val Perry Home of Kula RN CGC, Am. Can. Int'l. CH Cairngorm Coffee Tea or Me RA ME EE2/Can. September 24, 200816 yr My girl will mark (with a very lady like squat with her left leg lifted an inch above the ground) and then as she kicks her legs to spread her scent she barks, as if to say "The Great & Wonderful Iz has been here...." Thank goodness she is much more discriminating than Kona...and will only mark a few specific spots. Edited September 24, 200816 yr by eastofeden Raise your expectations for what your Cairn can do....and try very hard to meet your Cairn's expectations of you.
September 24, 200816 yr If I walk Holly with my friend's dog or dogs, she will squat at each place they squat and then kick up the pavement/soil/grass to make sure that other dogs know she has been there. This can involve a lot of squatting if I go out with my friend who has an female Irish terrier pup as she does a lot of wees in a 45 minute walk! www.cairnterriertalk.co.uk
September 24, 200816 yr The idea of 22 marks per mile with a 6 foot lead is fantastic! Currey gets to walk on a flexi most of the time, so he has more like 15 ft to do his marking. My favorite marks are on things that would only be considered "vertical" if your legs are less than a foot long. Currey loves to mark on weeds or tufts of crabgrass!!! As he gets older, the control gets better. Until he was about 2, he was out of ammo after 3 - 5 marks. Now he saves the drips, and keeps it going for at least 10 good marks!
September 24, 200816 yr I love it when Desta does the "handstand mark"...she gets both back legs completely up in the air so she can pee higher. LOL The closest my Corgi comes to that is hiking one back leg and hopping up and down on the other. He's just not built for handstands like Desta is.
September 24, 200816 yr Sort of makes me glad I have a girl. She almost never goes at all on a two to three mile walk! Desta, I can picture the two legs up, as there is a male maltese in the neighborhood who only shots with both back legs off the ground. LOL. I had never seen that before, he looks like he will flip at any minute.
September 25, 200816 yr Two favorite puppy moments - one little guy sidled up to a fencepost and hiked the *outboard* leg to pee. He had the smooth move but was unclear on the underlying concept. Another little guy sidled up to the same fencepost, hiked the correct leg, and promptly fell over. CAIRNTALK: Questions? September 25, 200816 yr I know this will embarass Skipper but he still squats to pee. When he marks its just half a squat. Kinda hard to catch when your in places like Petsmart, but the telltale marks are there, little silver dollar size puddles. Hopefully someday he will learn the leglift thing. September 25, 200816 yr I think squatting in PetSmart is much preferred over hiking in PetSmart. Never buy the bags of kibble closest to the floor! Edited September 25, 200816 yr by Chris's Desta
September 25, 200816 yr My guy has been known to do an entire #2 on 2 legs. He generally backs up to a bush or straddles it for #2...and occasionally he just tips forward mid-act. Just imagine me the first time he did it, standing along side the road, patiently waiting for the business to finish...laughing my head off like a crazy lady the whole time. Nothing like watching THAT feat of balancing!!!
September 25, 200816 yr Slightly off topic! But when Holly does a poo in my back garden she always comes dashing back into kitchen and runs round and then come up to me with a bounce - as if to tell me that she has been - and I can go out and clean up! www.cairnterriertalk.co.uk
September 25, 200816 yr Scooter is a pro at that as well. Sometimes towards the end of the walks, the leg goes up but nothing comes out. He also has to "roost" after every mark, kicking dirt into your shoes and all. He is my little marksman.Sadie even lifts one leg sort of while she is squatting. Jess, Scooter, Sadie and Dozer
September 25, 200816 yr Wow - I learn so much from this site! It had never occurred to me to count T's leg lifts. We do a three mile walk too, and I counted this morning. All I can say is Kona remains the champ! Tomorrow I'm going to count squirrel lunges. I think T will excel at that.
September 25, 200816 yr Well Dirty Harry loves to lift the leg..... of course Sugar is in season so it seems like he has peed on everthing. He wears a bellie band in the house because he can't be trusted. Rebel and Hammurab lift legs outside but not in the house. I have been watching the puppies and I have one that has to poop with his back against something never out in the middle of the paper or grass. All of them are pretty much paper trained and several of them the minute they go outside they pee or poop. Cairns are so smart! Liz Rebel, Hammurabi, Sugar, Dirty Harry, Paint, Duncan and Saffron
