Posted September 13, 200816 yr Well, we just to a leap and bought a new boat. I remembered reading a long time ago on here that some of you had boats and took your cairns on board. I'm wondering if they were puppies when you started them or if they were older? We're hoping to take them with us on some short runs once in a while. Wondering what you did to get them adjusted to it and anything I should know. They are great travelers in car and motor home. Also bought the house on the gulf in FL....boy am I glad Ike went west! September 13, 200816 yr Keegan does okay in our boat Kai-lee hates it!!!! She hates walking on the dock at the marina. She actually lays out flat all legs out and will not move at all. Once we got her on the boat it wasn't much better. We had her out a couple years ago in a friends pontoon and that was fine. But forget the boat, it is so stressfull for her that we have given up. No sense making her miserable.
September 14, 200816 yr My Cairn goes on boats regularly. We never had any issues. The first time we went out I walked him up to the boat on lead and gave him the "load up" command. He hopped aboard and never looked back. Now I do have an advantage, Dusty has had extensive training. He is a SAR dog and his training started when he was about 13 or 14 weeks old. I do keep a harness on him in sheltered waters (and close to shore) and a life vest if we go further out. We have also taught him commands to swim back to the boat or to the shore depending on circumstances. Now he thinks he owns all boats and that they are his personal taxi to take him to work.
September 14, 200816 yr Author Well i think Ellie will be standing on the front with her front legs out barking "i'm queen of the world"....not so sure about Dori. Dori is afraid to go over bridges, i think it's the change in noise or something. Should be interesting. BTW, do you use sun screen on his nose? Terry, mom of Dori and Ellie Mae
September 15, 200816 yr This summer , for the first time, I took Yoda fishing with me on my inflatable pontoon boat. I made a pad on one pontoon for him to sit or lay on. He wears a life jacket that has a handle and a D ring on it. I have a tether hooked to the boat and the D ring. The first time, in a pond, he fell off. He just swam alongside till I reached down and picked him up and set him back on his pad. Then he shook the water off and sat down to enjoy the rest of the trip. Twice since then we have floated the river here close to two town. When he gets hot I just pick him up and set him in the water for a few minutes. He seems to love to go. Before that he had never even been near any water other than his bowl and a couple of shower. He is now 2yrs and 8mos. old.
September 16, 200816 yr Packy started boating the summer after we got him (we got him in October, so there wasn't much boating going on). Let's see, that would have made him about 8 months old. He loves it as long as there is some shade to hide under when it gets really hot, and some water to drink. He almost always have him on a leash though, because he wants to jump right up on the front of the boat, which isn't good on a lake as rough as ours gets. He wears a life jacket and loves to get out and swim when we anchor. Jandy and my Cairns, Kirby & Phinney
September 17, 200816 yr maggie loves going on our little boat (16' alum. fishing boat)... i think she likes the wind in her fur! she started at probably 4 months old... a
September 18, 200816 yr Author thanks everyone. We already have life vest for the girls cause of our pool. They will be tethered for sure, Ellie would jump in the water in a heart beat, Dori will just hang by me I'm sure. We'll just take it slow and short trips with them. Terry, mom of Dori and Ellie Mae
