There are no groomers in the area willing to strip Chase. Apparently they are hard to come by. So I emailed the breeder and she offerred to give us a lesson. We drove out there and she showed me how to do it. Gave me a list of things to purchase, which I did. I stripped him a bit last week. Not very happy with the job I did. Not even sure I did it right. Difficult to remember all she said.

Is anybody familiar with a video or book on how to groom Cairns?

I would imagine there would be several out there, however, thought this would be the place to get the best advise.

Thanks,

Patty

If you find one send it my way!!! There is the Cairn Club of America grooming pamphlet, but its very hard to understand without the use of step by step colored pictures, it just shows you old black and white pictures of show dogs. I stripped Annie to her underwear easily enough because it was just "if you see hair pull!" But when she gets older and i have to start rolling the coat and shaping the face i am going to be clueless! How old is he? Are you wanting to do a full strip?

I found this forum to be very helpful. It took a bit of time, but searching "hand strip" and "stripping" pulls up a lot of threads here as well as links to the very few sites like the one Puddlesmama posted. I never could find a stripping video, which would have been most helpful. My short-term experience is that the more you strip, the more you figure out what you're doing and you'll get very comfortable with the whole process just by doing it a few times. When I set up a folding table outside and quit trying to strip Desta on top of my lap it went much faster...maybe just because I wasn't worried about the fur flying all over the place when we moved outdoors.

If you're planning to show your Cairn, you might need to be more precise. If you're not showing, then just strip the coat because it's the healthy thing to do for your dog's skin and coat, and don't worry if you don't get the perfect shape. I've got Desta's head very short since her fur is so soft (poor genetics I think) on her head. The more I pull it, the harder it's getting. Maybe someday she'll have a "normal" head of hair in length with a little bit of harshness. LOL

I did find the grooming page on Col. Potter's rescue site helpful, especially the photo at the bottom with the different color codes on achieving a good rolled show coat. (While it was helpful, I'm still probably not going to be a stickler for "show" perfection myself.)

Oops..I meant to say I dont remember where i found that link...hehe

I agree with Chris..once you start doing a little at a time youll get it...There is still times where i strip and feel i am finished..Just to stop a fetch game to pull out some skirt hairs or butt fluff.. :)

I LOVE MY CAIRNS PUDDLES AND IRIS!

I emailed Pat Holmes of the Cairn Terrier Club of Greater Detroit about a video that they offered on hand stripping. The price was $30. I never went through with the purchase becasue I found a groomer willing to strip. If anyone is interested in contacting Pat, send me a PM and I will give you her email address.

i'd consider the video above, or just call your breeder again for another lesson, bring a video camera and a nice bottle of wine as a gift...

Hello,

Sorry it took me so long to reply. Busy week.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Chase is 10 mos old.

I will view all the websites and will probably purchase the video. Although I hope it comes in DVD, I don't even think any of our sets have Video anymore.

Thank you again,

Patty and Chase

Id buy a video, dvd on stripping. some of the books, illistrations still leaves me frustrated, So I just use the MCK and pull out stray hair when I have Skipper outside.

Any groomers in Dayton area willing to strip a Cairn ?

Patty:

Where abouts in the country are you? Some of use know groomers who teach handstripping.... Give us a general city area... and maybe we can help.
