Is your Cairn a lap dog?

Scruffys Mom

Recommended Posts

I read PK's comments about Toto with interest in a prior post. I have also noted where several posters have noted their Cairn is not a lap dog. Both of mine are lap dogs and I have to balance lap time and sometimes both of them at one time. I am curious how many of yours are lap dogs and not. I am also curious of this is a true cairn trait not to be a lap dog, or is just an individual dog quirk. Thanks as I look forward to your comments.

Even though Angus has his own recliner, if there is a lap to be found he will be on it. It is usually mine, but he's not afraid to utilize the laps of our friends etc.

Bruski is definately a lap dog if we let him... I have the cutest picture of him dead asleep on my husbands lap. And if we're sitting on the floor, Bruski will be right up agaisnt our leg playing with his ball, etc. but making sure he's touching us. Ee just started doing it with my dog-walker and she thinks its the sweetest thing.

Renny isn't really much of a lap dog. He is normally in whatever room I'm in and stays close to me. Occasionally he does just want to hop on my lap for awhile and I'm always rather "honored" when he does. In fact he settled on my lap for nearly 2 hours last night for no apparent reason. He's sort of like a cat in that respect.

He does sleep in my bed with me and especially if it's cool in the room, he will snuggle right up next to me, or even get under the covers and get close. Or, he curls up on "his" pillow.

One big exception is during a thunderstorm or around the 4th of July or New Years when fireworks are being used. Then, he becomes an instant lap dog, and stays on my lap as much as possible. He has gotten better though. Last New Years, he did stay on my lap, but didn't shake the whole time like before.

Rocky's a 'foot' dog. He doesn't like to be up on my lap, but will lay with his head draped across my ankle. Same thing when he sleeps in the bed; he always has to be down by my feet.

He loves to cuddle tho - albeit at our feet - and always wants to be on the couch or chair with us when we're relaxing.

If you think you are too small to be effective, you have never been in bed with a mosquito

maggie is definitely not a lap dog, she wants no part of being held... she likes to be in the same room, but will move if you even try to approach her! then at bed time, she'll come and lick me to death!

I think it may be too early to tell here, but so far, Dibble isn't a lap dog at all (he's just coming up 2). Loves attention, but if he wants up on the sofa, it's just to look down at the world - from his own space! He doesn't really get up now unless he's on a lap - we were having dominance problems - and then he'll enjoy a brief cuddle, but he prefers to be independent. Occasionally he'll suddenly seek us out and want to lie alongside our feet, but mostly he's a free spirit.

On the other hand, Puku's still only little, but she's already shaping up to be much more affectionate - she'll seek us out, and she loves nothing more than to fall asleep on your lap. Two totally different personalities!

Lily is a lap dog without a doubt, while Bogart is more of a nearby dog...If I'm in the chair, he'll be in his bed at my feet. If I am in bed he is typically curled up around my legs. I think Lily would live in my lap if she could. Just a few minutes ago she was trying to get in my lap while I was checking my email....not an easy task.

While Bogart will every now and then get in my lap...it is short lived and usually if I touch him I ruin it and he hops down....little weird!! <_<

Kramer is a lap dog. He can be playnig but if I sit down and jumps right up to be next to me. He loves to be next to me or hubby and son. But.... if he is sitting with hubby or son and I come and sit down he gets up and comes to me, I think he is a mama's boy but thats ok with me because my first cairn was not a lap dog ever. All our dogs when I was growing up were not lap dogs so this is a nice change for me. When he goes in the car with me he is on my lap looking out the window.

I couldn't be without a lap dog ever! I love it.

WOOF! Eli, here.

I am not a lap dog. I am more of a nearby dog. I like to sit right by the Alpha B's chair so she can reach me in case she needs to rub my head or stroke my back. Or rub my belly. I let her do this because it seems to keep her calm.

I gotta stay on the floor so in case we get attacked by elephants or aliens I am ready to scare them off with my ferocious and relentless BARKBARKBARK!!!

WOOF!

Teddy, Sweet Pea and Olie here. We're not really lap pups, but we love

becoming "bookends" to Mom on the couch to get all the scritchies we can.

Sometimes that's hard since there are three of us...but we seem to manage.

With Packy, it just depends. If I don't feel good, he's right there with me and even wants to lay on top of me. He won't leave my side. If I am sitting in the recliner, he will almost always jump up and sit on my lap. But when you ask him to come up, he usually isn't interested. So, I guess I would say he's a lap dog on his own terms, when he wants it. When he's in the mood though, he's a real sweetheart!

Kiara is a daddy's girl and will sit in his lap but not mine. Abbey and Hannah are both lap dogs, especially Hannah. Then I have the close cousin of Cairns, my Westie who would like nothing more than for me to carry him all day. We call him our "foo foo" dog. Hannah gets jealous of his demanding attention, so sometimes I hold them both.

Pepper is definitely a nearby dog. He will lean into cuddles given on the floor or elsewhere, and I catch him peeping around a corner to see if I am there. But on the couch he will get up and move down if I sit down next to him. Like he "likes his space?" :confused1: My Westie Henry on the other hand lies flat up against me on a chair, bed, you name it. Maybe I have the best of both!

Cooper likes to play and very seldom wants to be held or gets on the lap. Jezzabelle, on the other hand Demands attention and loves to lay on your lap and soak up all the petting she can get for as long as she can get it. She's kind of chubby so she paws at you until you pick her up lol. We hope to get some pictures on here of them soon.

If you want the best seat in the house, move the dog.

Real good point kjwarnold. Somehow they know when a person isn't feeling good. Then they will either become lap dogs or at the very least stay very close to the unwell upright.

You're right about them knowing when you aren't feeling good. Here's Bailey taking care of his Mom after she had surgery in '06.

Dapper Dan is a lap dog, he loves to give lovins and be kissed on. He does get hot once in awhile and needs to cool his belly off on the hardwood floors. He's not much on the blanket situation like our other 2 dogs are. He's to much of a personal heater to cuddle under the covers.

Would like to see some cute pictures of "lap doggies".

Trying to get pictures of Dapper Dan on here... finding it difficult.

Our dogs do have a myspace website. JagerLadyJadeandDapperDan

Tabitha isn't a lap dog at all. She always wants to be in the same room, but she likes her space. She will only sit close to you if you are petting her. Once you stop, she's gone.

Teona on the other hand is like velcro. As soon as you sit she's on you. She even wants to be in my lap when I'm doing my hair, sitting at the computer or scrapbooking. She is my little "love bug".

Crunch is a lap dog sometimes. When he is in a loving mood, he is all tongue, sits in your lap, and needs attention. Other times, he sits at the front dining room windows to monitor for intruders (lizards, birds, other dogs...) Gus NEVER wants to sit in your lap. The odd thing is that Gus will follow you from room to room and always sit within a foot of you. He just wants you in sight. BUT if you try to sit close to him where you are touching, he will move over a couple of inches. It is very humorous.
