kjwarnold Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Okay, I have to preface this story with the fact that Packy is fish-crazy. If any of you do earthdog and have dogs that are rat-crazy, you know what I mean. We live on a lake and for him, it's an obsession. So, yesterday we had a great day, spending most of it outside in the beautiful spring weather. I did a little stripping work on Packy out on the dock, he got to chase the ducks and fished some for bluegills. He didn't catch any, but he did catch one the day before. He had his first swim in the lake that day -- it's still only 45 degrees but hey, it's a fish so he's going in! So late yesterday afternoon, our neighbor waves us over to see her new dock. We leave Packy loose because we know he'll run right over to her, since her Lab puppy is out. But is that what he did? No, the little dork ran right past the Lab puppy (who's thinking, "Hey, I should chase him and find out where he's going!") and directly to the next neighbor over, where he proceeds to jump into their beautiful koi fish pond and try to catch the fish! He hasn't been over there since last fall, but apparently that's the first thing in his mind as he's racing wild and free that way. The Lab, meanwhile, is racing over but is caught before she decides to join the swim. We had a heck of a time getting him out; DH almost had to get in to drag him back, but he finally swam over and we hauled him up. Boy, did he smell like fish! Lucky for us, the neighbor thought it was hilarious and no koi were hurt in the incident. We sat there on their deck with them for another hour, with Packy whining the whole time to get back in with the fish. He dried nicely in the sunshine though, with no fish smell left on his coat. You got to love those coarse, Cairn coats that shed dirt and fish smells! I guess we'll keep him on leash for future visits to the neighbors! Jandy and my Cairns, Kirby & Phinney
oscar's mom Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Packy has a one track mind with fish. That is too funny!
nancy rink Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 That is hysterical! Packy & Rocky must be related somehow; Rocky loves to go for dips in our pond (and it's stinky too) & this morning was barking at the Koi. He hasn't tried to catch any yet, thank Heaven! He does like to snap at the lily pads & bob for his tennis ball in there- If you think you are too small to be effective, you have never been in bed with a mosquito
bradl Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Intriguing story. I had no idea Cairns could be so effective fishing. Sounds like Packy might need to get a fishing license to go with his dog license. Hope he doesn't get busted for poaching Koi! CAIRNTALK: Questions? Marty & Sherry Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 We need pictures &/or video of this activity!
Teri9672 Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 too funny.......LOL If you had only had a camera We too have a fish pond in the backyard, but the girls have never gotten in. Tabitha barks at the fish and Teona uses it as her personal drinking bowl. In these pictures she's stealing the cheerios from the fish. I am convinced one day she is going to fall in
