Tips for hiking

I got the Outward Hound front leg thru carrier for my hike and Scooter is too big for it. He can wiggle right out. Does anyone have any ideas on how I might be able to carry him if he gets tired? I can't get a backpack carrier because I have my hiking pack. Has anyone ever tried putting their dog in a regular backpack?

Well Scooter did a 12 mile hike today. It wasn't really steep but it was a good hike. He did really well, didn't get too tired. We rested and he drank lots of water. I love my Planet dog zip lead, I hooked him to a D-ring on my backpack with a caribiner and I had 2 free hands the whole walk. He saw a porcupine which was VERY exciting (even though he couldn't get too close to it.
