That face is adorable! and seems Ive seen that look somewhere. I think they are digging for grubs,

We have a few craters in our yard too that weve covered over several times -also if you have moles and voles in your yard ..the tunnels they make are not that deep..Misty digs them up too.She has recently been adding alot of bugs to her diet-and even barfed up a flying grasshopper..of course it was unable to fly after that.

If they dont like dirt..Id say you dont have a cairn-its like an obsession!
