Sorry to be a bummer but I am NOT looking forward to the 4th of July only because of the fireworks that terrify my Madison!

It seems everybody in my neighborhood has some type of firework that they will let off tomorrow night...many are illegal and extremely loud. I honestly can't blame people for celebrating such a patriotic day and so I do not get upset but when I see Madison shake and run from door to door, window to window and bark continuously, I want to comfort her.

And so I am prepared with some really nice music downloaded on my computer to play at the loudest level ever (and of course I will be singing too) and hopefully that will ease the sound of the outside celebrations!

I hope my singing doesn't contribute to Maddy's anxiety.

I know what you mean, Sandy. Kiara hates thunder, so fireworks are just as bad for her. We will probably have to give her a doggie downer and crate her. She finds comfort in her crate. The others don't seem to care about noise.

I posted this before, but it's worth repeating. If anyone is crating your pet, it is also good to remove their collar. Years ago on a 4th of July, my sister and dh left their beagle in his wire crate while they went to watch fireworks. I can't remember what company the crate was made by, but it opened in front and also opened on top. Apparently my sister had no idea the dog would freak out like he did. He must have jumped so hard in a frantic attempt to escape the crate that he popped open the top enough for his collar to catch on one of the latches and he hung himself. My sister and dh said the picture of seeing him hanging there in the crate will be forever imprinted in their mind. I'm just sharing this to make others aware to please remove collars to prevent such a tragedy.

I'm in agreement with Kayharley on the fireworks.

Our city has a new fireworks ordinance that so far has made this year much better than the past few years. Instead of starting about two weeks before the Fourth, they are now legal only on the 2nd thru the 4th, and more restrictions on what is legal have been added. Fines have been increased for violators, and enforcement is much stronger than in the past.

Renny doesn't like either fireworks or thunder either. Luckily, unlike some dogs, he doesn't try to hide under the carpet or something similar. But, he does become quite "clingy" and spends way more time than usual on my lap or by my side. Later in the night he tends to snuggle closer in bed instead of staying on "his" side of the bed. OK, OK, he may be just a little spoiled.

On the bright side, our walks last night must have set speed records. He stepped right out and barely stopped long enough to "take care of business". For once he didn't have to stop and sniff every tree.

For the members, have a fun and safe Independence Day. For the Cairns, things should be back to normal after tomorrow.

I'm not looking forward to the fireworks either. Our lawn is very dry, and the neighbor's always shoot off loud fireworks. I'm worried about a fire starting!

Scout doesn't seem bothered by the noise of the fireworks, and Finch retreats to the basement, but doesn't seem scared.

Let's just hope we all get through the 4th without any incidents.

And yes, let's not forget what we are celebrating. :magic:

Here, people seem to shoot off firecrackers and what-not all through the month of June through about the second week of July. Ellie sticks close to my heel the whole time; she really hates the sound of fireworks, which is no surprise since she doesn't like thunderstorms either. I love Independence Day, but I feel bad for Ellie.

Black Lady doesn't seem to care one way or the other.

No, but they can yodel. We changed our plans for the 4th so that we wouldn't have to drug Kiara. Just seeing the look of fear in our toughest Cairn and seeing her so clingy was such a sight. We had a quiet cook out while Kiara exchanged arms w/ someone sitting on the recliner. We live right off of the beach, so we just opened our front blinds and watched the fireworks from our living room. The best fireworks for me were watching the ones live from New York, what a show!

I love the girls in their "patriotic poses." I thought it was so funny that Brady actually looked serious in his first shot. I have no idea why he was sitting so still but imagined he was saying the Pledge all to himself. :)
