Trying Earthdog This Weekend

We're going to the All Terrier Fun Day at Purina Farms this weekend, near St. Louis. For $5, Packy gets to try out Earthdog, Agility, maybe Flyball and some other fun things from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. We've never done anything like this with him, but we're really looking forward to it. DH is bringing the camera, so we hope to get some fun video. We even talked some friends with two Cairns to go along with us. Can't wait to see all those terriers together -- I'm sure it will be wild!

So all you Earthdog people, you take the collar off your dog before they go down the tunnel, right? He's always wanting to explore culverts, so hopefully he won't have any problems doing this. Anything else we need to know? Not sure how he'll do if he tries Flyball; he's just not that interested in tennis balls.

Anybody else in the St. Louis area going?

AKC rules forbid collars in the tunnel. I believe the fun day is not an AKC event, so it would be up to you, probably. I'd still recommend no collar since that's what the rule will be when you go to a regular test.

Real field work is a different story according to most of what I've read - there it's typical to wear a radio locator collar so the dog can be dug to. In an ED den, they can't really get lost underground, or go anywhere you can't easily get to. So the safety consideration of 'no snags' is probably behind the no-collars rule.

Have fun!

I'm in St. Louis and I would LOVE to come! I just had ankle surgery yesterday and I'm in a walking boot. If it feels better this weekend I might convince DH to come with me. Shoot....I wish this were a month from now!

It's this Sunday from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. Check the Purina Farms website -- I think I might have seen another one scheduled in April, too. Yep, just checked and it's April 7th. If you can't make this one, maybe you can get to the one next month.

I just noticed that they're also having Herding Trials this weekend, sponsored by the Gateway Australian Shepherd Club. That will be fun to watch. My sister has an Aussie and she'll try to herd anything!

The earthdog dens at Purina that they will be using are all fenced, so don't worry about taking the collar off. The herding trials are in a different area, you will see them on the right before you get to the main entrance into Purina Farms. The only things I have seen the MO Earthdogs do at their fundays are earthdog and lure races, now at the Canine Olympics in Sept. you can try agility, flyball, etc. It's still a great opportunity to try earthdog and see all the dogs. The people are very friendly and helpful and it's pretty laid back. You might bring a chair, alot of waiting in line involved and bring water for you dog. I will be there with my three.

Ah dang...and here I am in Iowa now! Well, I used to live in Farmington MO and still have family in Arcadia/Ironton area so maybe I can venture down and visit them during the next one!! :)

RATS!!

Izzie and I missed it! We were in St. Louis for a family celebration. Shucks. And there were 5 dogs in the house--so 3 could easily have gone and enjoyed it! (The other 2 are older, a bit more sedate!)

So Purina Farms holds this often? I'll have to bookmark its website.

Tell us how it went!

For me, it's thrilling to watch the terriers do what they were bred to do. They need to learn what to do. The earthdog crowd is normally very helpful and patient. Hope you experience it soon.

We had a great time and the people helping out were the best. There were more tips and corrections for me than for Packy though!
