Well we went to the Drs for shots and a check-up...Everything went really well - I hate taking him for shots because last time he really cried! This time he didn't even know. The Dr kept asking me if I was ok though...ha ha. Tucker weighs 22.8 pounds - is this average for a male?

My boys came in at 22 and 23 at our Jan. vet visit..... The Vet put them on a diet, he want's the both under 20 lbs each.

My one dog Bratt is tall and long, where as Mett is standard size but 'big boned' and wide set

Will weighs in at 23 and I'd say he is 2-4 lbs. heavier than he should be. He looks slightly chubby right now - but we have had a long winter. I am so bad about going for walks when the weather is bad. There is a fairly lengthy and informative post under "Best of Breed" I think it is titled "How big is your Cairn?" Seems like they come in many different sizes. Will's nickname is "Chunky Monkey" :)

Wow, my Scruffy is 14 mons and weighs in at 13 lbs. I do homefeed, and there is very little starch or fat in her diet. She gets 2 meals a day, about 1 cup each. Treats all day with her clicker training and a peanut butter or pumpkin large cookie at night. My vet says she is perfect (and she is...). I wonder if Scruff is a runt. Sparks is 12 weeks and 7.5 lbs. He actually eats about the same amount each day as Scruff as he is a real piggy and he gets lunch. DO you think mine are to skinny?

There's really no way to say without putting hands on a dog. Too much depends on size, bone density, etc. Our four range from 13-15 for the girls, with our 'big boy' at 18 lbs.

Scout (4 yrs) weighs 14 pounds, and Finch (2yrs) weighs 13. Scout is taller than Finch and not as wide. I usually feel their ribs and look at the waist to judge how much food they get.

last week both girls went in for a visit

Tabitha (8 yrs) is up to 16 lbs and Teona (2 years) is right at 13 lbs.

I need get Tabitha back down a few pounds for the health of her knees. She had been down to 13 lbs, but I started giving the girls treats again and I need to go back to the cheerios as treats. I also haven't been measuring Tabby's food like I had been. She is supposed to get 1/3 cup twice per day. I think she was almost 18 lbs just before her double ACL surgery almost 2 years ago.

Their body shapes are both so different. Tabitha is short and wide and Teona is tall and thin.

sheila and Misty

Misty is not quite 7months and she weighs 17 already! But the vet assured me shes not overweight-that she will probably just be a big girl possibly between 20and 25lbs. Scruffy from 11 months on was 17lbs -but he was a few lbs overweight.

Ellie is 6 months old and weighs almost 9 pounds. Gracie is 13 weeks old and only weighs 3.5 lbs. She is tiny but steadily gaining weight...I was so worried about her today because her tummy was so fat, but a quick trip outside cured that! :)

My Siggy is three and a half years old and weighs 15 pounds. My vet said that it wouldn't hurt him to get down to 13 or 14. Maybe he has small bone structure though, I don't know

Kenna is 6 months and 10.5 pounds. Her trainer told me she looked good. She was a little chubby when I got her but she dropped half a pound, I think because I walk her and take her to the dog park so much.

Gem fluctuates between 16.5/17lb and looks good :)

A couple of weeks back she hit 17.5lb so I cut the food portions back for a week and now she is back at 16.5. :)

As far as Cairn standards of ideal size, only my Hannah is proportionately balanced and weighs in around 13 lbs. Abbey is 14 1/2 lbs and Kiara is 18 1/2 lbs. Both Abbey and especially Kiara are too long according to breed standard. This is the best I've seen them look since I changed their diet by cutting back on the portion of dry Canidae and adding Embark, a dehydrated raw diet of turkey, veggies & fruit, no grains. I also have male Westie pup which we all know is related to Cairns that is almost 6 mths old and weighs 8 lbs.

A vet once told me there is the show weight and a pet weight.

2lbs heavier for a pet is quite acceptable :)

Rebel is 22.8 lbs and my vet said he is solid and not overweight. I was told by a judge that Sugar needed to lose weight and she was experiencing the false preg. thing. I like seeing a little waist so that is what I judge as the weight except on the Pug
