Getting to know YOU

I just love reading everything about each other. Now I was wondering there are two Liz's, a Beth, and an Elizabeth. I am also an Elizabeth AKA Liz or Lizzie what about you guys. I haven't met many people in my lifetime with my name so this is cool same name love for cairns.

I think Anna was in here a couple of time also....thats kinda cool.

Ok how many of you loved watching the Wizard of Oz as a child? It was always shown in this area around December so I considered it a Christmas movie. We have had Irish Setters while our boys grew up and when our last one was gone I was looking for the perfect dog....wanting a smaller one. And I was online putting in traits I liked (most of them were Setter traits) but I did add small, little shedding and low and behold Cairn Terrier came up and when I researched the breed I read Toto.... I knew it was meant to be. We got Rebel and he is the BEST dog in the world!

We have been dealing with my Mother in Law this week, she has been in an out of the hospital.....I think I use this forum as stress relief someplace I read funny stories and have friends someplace to escape. thanks everyone

We watched Wizard of Oz every year, I think they showed it here around Easter time. And, can you believe I never saw the end of it until after I was married because the sister just younger than me would get scared when the flying monkeys showed up and we would always have to change the channel! Of course, that was back in the day when there was only one TV, no remote control, and it was in black and white!!!!

pat.

Children don't care how much you know...they want to know how much you care.

Liz- First this is purely coincidental- but on the subject of Oz- My Aunt owns a store in Chesterton, IN. Called 'The Yellow Brick Road'- and every year they hold 'Oz Fest' (I think they have it in Bloomington IN). She also goes on crusises with the surviving Munchikins!

As a child she would send me autographed photos for a scrap book she started for me. I was never really an major Oz fan, and I gave the scrap book to my husband as a gift- since he is an Oz-fanatic. It was only after I had decided on the Cairn breed that I found out about Toto/Teri. It'll be interesting to see what my Aunt says when she gets our Halloween card this year with Mett & Bratt on it.

My mom named me just Beth as she didn't want nicknames. I'm surprised she didn't name me Elizabeth being that was her mother's name.

The first dog I had after moving out of the house was an Irish Setter. He was a beautiful dog, but so much hair all over! Mine was also very hyper.

Yes, I did love watching Wizard of Oz growing up. I'm showing my age here, but I remember how excited my brother, sister and I were when my parents bought a color TV. One of the first things we wanted to see in color was Dorothy opening the door when she landed in Oz. I loved Toto so much and always thought how I'd love to have a dog like that. I always had large dogs and one day I mentioned to my dh how I've always wanted a Cairn since I was little. It was shortly after that we got into Cairns and now were hooked on them.

I am late on this becuase my DH and I were out of town for 5 days in North Carolina. It was fun but we were a little disappointed that the leaves haven't really started changing yet. :D

My name is Somer (pronounced Summer) and I will be 24 in December. We live in Ellerslie Georgia which is about 2 hours south of Atlanta (about 10 minutes from Fort Benning for any military families out there). My dh (Steve) and I celebrated our 3rd anniversary this July. We have no 2 legged children (yet) but may think about starting a family next year (big question mark there). Steve and I both work at Aflac and LOVE to travel. While we are out of town, Savannah stays with my Mom and Dad (who actually call themselves Grandma and Grandpa around her). She adores staying at their house and they LOVE having her there!! I also enjoy scrapbooking and any other craft project that you can think of. My favorite time of the year is coming up because there are so many holidays to decorate for!! Savannah is our first dog together and our first Cairn EVER. I have wanted a dog for a long time and my DH finally decided that we should get one before we decided to have children (he is a NEAT FREAK and really needed to learn to chill out before we thought about kids. Boy, has Savannah done the trick!!!!). He went online and did research on different breeds and had it narrowed down to a Cairn or a Norwich terrier. We finally decided on a Cairn and began calling breeders. Savannah will be a year old in January and has really been a joy. Now that she is a little older, it seems like she is becoming more affectionate and more willing to cuddle. She has become my shadow and follows me around the house religiously. When we go on vacation and she isn't there, it is lonely. It isn't the same to take a shower without a puppy face peeping in to see what you are doing. I can't imagine life without her now.

I just wanted to mention how attached I have become to this site. Every day, my dh asks for an update on the "Cairn site" because he knows that I have been on to read the new posts. He looks at me like I am insane when I get emotional talking about the deaths of your pups or one of them being sick, but this really does feel like an extension of my family and I feel like one of my best friends is hurting anytime that something bad is happening. I love you guys and this site! It has been great to meet the people behind the posts!

We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made.

Hi,

I am new here. My name is Robin I live in Sonoma Ca. We just got our first Cairn Terrier puppy Jackson, who is 5 months old one month ago from a breeder Washington. We have a 7 year old Miniature Schnauzer Oliver as well.

Jackson is a awesome dog. He is a pure terrier or as I say at times a pure Cairn Terror. But it makes it all the more fun. He is teething and he has those cute little dropped ears. Hopefully they will stand up soon. :)

Looks like there is another Gracie's Mom here! I did a double take when I read the bio! :D I feel very lucky in my life. Although my first husband passed away nine years ago, I have since met a wonderful man and we have now been married 5 years last June. My three boys are in college with the eldest graduating from Mizzou with a law degree in May, the middle son with a degree in business (MIS) in December, and the "baby" still undecided...

I have been teaching for almost 28 years and hope to retire in a couple more. My husband sells real estate and manages our business interests. We live west of St.Louis and love to travel! We especially love Mexico and Florida. Our Cairn babies keep us really busy but we love them to pieces. We love to go to movies, read, travel, and visit family. My dad is in very poor health so I am trying to juggle trips to southern Missouri with the ever increasing demands of my job.

I have so much enjoyed reading about everyone! What interesting people are owned by Cairns! :P

Hi Everyone,

I'm Stacey. I'll be 54 this month. I've been married most of my adult life - just not to the same man! I am originally from Long Island, lived in the Buffalo area for a time and then moved to Connecticut. Shortly after my divorce from my first husband I met (on the Web) an English guy and moved to the U.K. I now live in Surrey, about 25 mins commuter train ride to central London.

I've shown a German Shepherd and a Cairn, but have owned and been owned by other GSDs, a Yorkie, a mixed breed and a Boston Terrier. I now have two Cairns, Rudi and Abby. I no longer have time for showing, so both are pets. I miss showing and belonging to dog clubs a lot!

Rudi is a former show dog who I bought to keep Abby company. Rudi is gorgeous, but he is the biggest wimp on Cairndom and would spend most of his time curled up on my husband's lap if he could (when he wasn't eating and squirrel chasing). Abby used to love all other dogs - but now she ignores them as she only has eyes for Rudi. :D I've worked for the same company for 23 years and can work at home most of the time - so my Cairns are my office mates (and bed mates too!)

My name is Digby, I am just over 1 year old, guess that makes me seven in Dog years. I live in New England and I am an accomplished little Canid, I have my Undergrad in being Fresh, and my Masters in being Cute, and I am working on my PHD in becoming human. Some of my hobbies are , sleeping, eating, playing, and peeing and pooping in public places with no shame. On occasion, I will even pass gas and run when I hear the sound because I have no idea what the heck it is.

A typical day in the life of Digby is, my owner (a complete pain in the a**) and I often go for hikes down this trail where there are so many Chipmunks my brain practically explodes because I don't know which one to chase first. Then I come home and usually take up a considerable amount of space sleeping on the couch and snore like a chainsaw, and expose myself by laying on my back. Then I wake up and eat as much food as that cheapskate Owner will give me, still waiting for him to catch on to the fact I can eat alot more. Then I usually cap off my evening by playing, and watching TV...Yes watching TV I said, I like to watch Dog shows, or shows with Dogs in them, very interesting, really head-turning. At the end of the day I hit the hay with my owner and his owner (Wife), and we all cuddle up on the bed and sleep happily ever after. Truth is, I snore all night and take up so much of the bed they had to get a King to accomodate me.

“In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi-human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog.”

As Rocky Balboa would say - YO Digby! This is Scully from Philly. You've got it made man. You almost have those humans trained. Now if they were REALLY trained they would give you the whole king size bed just to yourself. Well, you're young, you've got time to work on them. Keep up the good work!

BTW, will you be doing the book or talk show circuit to explain your methods of humanoid training? I'd bet Oprah would love to have you on her show. Just think - you could get your own Cairnmobile or some other fab gift from her!

So nice to put histories to all the names that I have become so familiar with this past year and a half since I have become a Cairn owner. I'm Stacey, proud mother of Maxwell. I have two other boys, but they don't wag their tails and lay on my foot when I type. Married 30 years this year, and we all live in Maryland - transplanted from Brooklyn, N.Y. I'm a special education teacher who is addicted to the Cairn Terrier Club postings, and I love to look at the pictures of your Cairns. I never saw one that I didn't love. My husband makes fun of me. "Why would anyone want to watch a little video of two dogs eating"? I can't help it - I watch them over and over. I also love running, and wish that Max would run with me -- but he is totally not interested. Anyone else's Cairns go jogging with them?

LOL I try to go running with Savannah but she thinks we are playing and she will run right in front of me and stop. I can't tell you how many times she has almost made me fall. Now we just walk. It is safer that way.

My husband also tries to run with Alfie but Alfie gets too distracted by squirrels or anything that moves and starts pulling towards that direction! It's definitely easier to walk, and he follows commands better (not all the time  ).

Guest Eli, here

I've known my Up-Right for almost 3 months now. Her name is Marty, she is like 378 years old in dog years. Jeez, that's old. I live with her and her 16 year old teen-alien. The big Bossy One is a school nurse in a high school. I got to go to the school one day. It was pretty cool, lots of teen-aliens there and we had a lot of fun. She got me in July after the previous terrier, an Airedale, passed away. She says me and the 'dale are very similar in personality and temperament; I am just smaller. I think I am big; I do not know what she is talking about. The Bossy One likes to read books and collect antique thingys. I like to eat books and collect sticks and acorns. She should collect sticks and acorns, they are cheaper than antiques. We both like to take naps after a long walk. And we both like snacks! Imagine that! The teen-alien romps with me a lot. He is an honor student and has the lead in the school play. He is learning to drive. Yikes! We live in northern Illinois, near the Wisconsin border. The leaves are changing color and falling and the squirrels are everywhere. But the Bossy One will not let me catch any! I know how to catch 'em: just run around and act like a NUT! Aside from that injustice, I am pretty happy with them and we get along really well. Now that I am a little older (almost 7 months) the Bossy One is getting less bossy. I think she is shaping up quite nicely, for an Up-Right. But don't tell her I said that.

Woof!

Eli

Hi,

I'm Debbie. I'm the one and only that has not posted a pic yet of my babies. :( I will figure it out eventually. I am Maggie's Mom. Her Daddy and I have been married 25 years. I am a medical assistant and CP. My DH works for the local utilities company. We have two awesome children. A girl 21 and a boy 17. Two wonderful fur babies. We have Maggie 7 months old and Lucky, our Golden who is 3.5 years old. We live and breath E. Tennessee air and enjoy camping, cruises, motorcycling, Nascar, UT Football just to name a few of our interest. I am very pleased to sit down after a long day on my feet and read about all of your events. It trully helps me realize that Maggie is truly a sane dog after all. Cairn Terrier speaking of course. Thanks for all your wonderful enlightening and funny stories. It is great fun to read about you all. I hope to continue to read and enjoy and hopefully I will at some point figure out how to post a pic. I have a dogster pic but for some reason I can't post a pic to this forum. I think it's crazy.

Hello All --

I am new to the site and new to the life of the Cairn World. So far it has been a great ride. I have had Zoey for just over 1 month and she is 13 weeks old. What a great idea it was to venture into the "pet owner category".

We had poodles and goldens growing up and I always thought Id get a pet as an adult but for some reason I put the decision off until just recently and I am in my mid 30s ! I am not sure how I stumbled onto the Cairn breed but I am so happy I did. I had never heard of them prior to the day or two before going to pick up Zoey. They are like a diamond in the rough !!!!

Driving home from the breeders I was a nervous wreck and thought I had gotten myself into something I wouldn't be able to handle. The commitment of raising a dog. However, a month later I wouldn't trade her for the world. She is the love of my life !!

My name is Jen and I seem to be the only single person on the site -- however I have hope. I figure I just now found little miss perfect puppy .. so maybe Mr Right is just around the corner too. He better be a Cairn lover though !!

I am a special education teacher and live in the great white state of Maine. I have been teaching for just over 10 years and living in Maine for about 20. We grew up in Va.

Thanks for all the great info and advice you all have given about the life and care of Cairns. It has been a great help. Also, its been nice getting to "know" you through this thread,

Happy Cairning !!

Wow...what a great thread. I've enjoyed reading about everyone! My name is Mickey and I am a relatively new Cairn owner -- we got Angus in April. I have had several dogs over the years, but Angus is the first Cairn. I have totally fallen for him, so much so that we are starting to think about a second Cairn.

My husband's name is Bill. He is 34, and a plumber. I can't believe the number of people in law enforcement on this site. When I met Bill, he had helped a friend open a restaurant and was cooking there as well as another restaurant. Shortly after that he went to the police academy and worked as a police officer for a couple years. It is hard to get a decent job as a police officer here in Pittsburgh, PA (right outside of Pgh actually), so he eventually took the test to become a plumber. He finished his 5 year apprenticeship this spring so now he's a journeyman. We've got cooking, security and home repair wrapped up at our house!

I am 37 and worked as a speech therapist for almost 10 years, before I finished my master's and now work as an Occupational Therapist. I've been an OT for 6 years now. I work in a school for kids with special needs, ranging in age from 3 yrs to 21 yrs. and love it. The pay isn't great, but you can't beat the school schedule--especially with kids.

Bill and I have 2 daughters -- Samantha, age 3, and Kaylie, age 17 mos. They were part of our decision to get a Cairn. We wanted a dog that was smaller, but sturdy and that was good with kids. We could not have asked for a better dog than Angus. The girls adore him and he is SO good with them.

I don't have much time for hobbies anymore, although it is getting a little better. Bill was in school 2 or 3 nights a week for the last 5 years, so now that he's done we've had a bit more free time. I like to read, belong to an Irish-American women's group, I'm learning to knit, and Angus and I just started his first obedience class this week. I guess that is it! It has been good getting to know you all since joining this forum in April!

Hi everyone! I thought I would jump in here with my first post. I have been reading this forum much of this past summer. I found it when I found the Cairn Club of America website. I followed the link for the forum from there. I spent a lot of time researching dog breeds, and then visited a breeder before deciding I wanted a Cairn Terrier. We have had Golden Retrievers as part of our family for the past 27 years. This time I wanted a smaller dog that didn't shed so much.

Our Cairn Terrier came to live with us the end of August. Paragon's Bearchan Caimbuel, better know as Bear, is 4 1/2 months old (18 weeks). We were working with a breeder and had expected to get a puppy from her in the spring. She offered to check around with other breeders on the chance we could get a puppy sooner. As luck would have it, she called that a breeder friend had a male puppy if we wanted him. I called the breeder, and 2 days later we drove to western Iowa to get him. My husband won't soon let me forget that we drove 800 miles round trip to get this puppy for me. True love is grand. Anyway from the first moment, we found out about him until the present, Bear has brought us joy and love. He's adorable.

Ok, about me....My name is Marge. I am a middle aged woman...57 years on this earth. My husband and I have been married for 27 years. We live in Wisconsin in a rural area about 35 miles north of Madison. I am a teacher and work as a substitute teacher for our local school district. My husband is self employed in the insurance, financial, and investment field. We have 3 children....a 27 year old son who is an electrical engineer and lives and works in Illinois, a 23 year old son who returned to college this past year and hopes to become a minister, and a 20 year old daughter who is a junior in college majoring in early childhood education. My other passion, besides my little Bear, is music. Specifically, I play guitar and sing. I am fortunate to have several Taylor guitars. My house is a mess because I have this habit of choosing to either play with Bear or play with my guitars. Priorities! I've learned it's much more important to enjoy life than obsess over dust. As to other dogs in our family, we recently lost our 2 Golden Retrievers....our 14 yr old had to be put down and then a few weeks later, our 5 year old died of undetected heart disease. We also adopted my Mom's dog 3 years ago, a Sheltie-Cocker mix named Savannah, when my Mom became ill. So, at present we have the 2 dogs...Bear and Savannah. In the spring, we will be getting another Golden Retriever puppy. DH misses his big dogs. I admit I do, too. A second Cairn will have to wait.

This thread has been delightful. I have read and enjoyed so many of your posts. Now with getting to know more about you, made me want to join in and finally introduce myself. I have also enjoyed the pictures of your beautiful Cairns. I hope to learn how to post pictures so I can show off my little boy. I do want to thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences with your dogs. It has been so helpful to me. Thank you.

MAKE it a GREAT day!!! :D
