Posted November 26, 2024Nov 26 Hi everyone! Just wanting to know if anyone has a recommendation for some paw protection for the cold icy roads for walky time! Last year we had 40 below but even at 0 degrees it's too cold for their paws. My attempt at a homemade bootie was a dismal failure! Please help
November 26, 2024Nov 26 I wish I had an answer to be helpful but also somewhat relieved that I have *no idea at all* — and hope to remain meteorologically (?) ignorant on the subject! I do look forward to some recommendations though in case we are plunged into actual weather. CAIRNTALK: Questions? November 28, 2024Nov 28 My favorite boots are made out of felt with no hard pads on the bottom(my dogs don’t like that). They are easy enough to make with Velcro to close them. And yes they have a tendency to fall off but if you also use painters masking tape at the top,of the boots it works pretty good. The picture shows the boots without the tape on them.Alberta winters can be really cold ! November 28, 2024Nov 28 Those are great looking boots. Now that you've mentioned it, felt is used for Autosocks (a tire chain alternative) which I've found to be fantastic on the (rare) snow day around here. CAIRNTALK: Questions? December 8, 2024Dec 8 Lynn - where do you get those boots? Our boys manage to pull off everything we have tried.
December 17, 2024Dec 17 Oops sorry Kathryn I haven’t been checking . I buy them at a local pet store but I have certainly made them myself…and trust me I am not a person that sews! If you can get a thicker type felt, sew on Velcro (don’t have it at the top of the boot, about 3/4 of the way down . Simple and if they kick them off use painters tape at the top of the boot when going for a walk. This is close to the way mine look but again put the tape down a bit lower and just use felt. https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/698319553/tough-boots-set-of-4-water-resistent?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=dog+boots+pattern&ref=sr_gallery-1-4&content_source=3d4a7cdfd815efb0b99a918f236dc18422b038c2%3A698319553&organic_search_click=1 Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened. - Anatole France Adventures with Sam &Rosie
December 19, 2024Dec 19 Thanks. I am really inept at sewing so not sure I could even do this, but maybe could find something and alter it. I am just as much a wimp about cold weather as the pups are though. And cold nit here early -- already had a couple below zero (F) days last week.
December 19, 2024Dec 19 Author thanks for the great idea. I think I can make these...but regarding the painter tape..just wrap around every time you walk..like you mean frog tape? Anyhow..I can help chuckling at the look on your pups face..kind of disgruntled !
December 19, 2024Dec 19 Frog tape ….if it’s the green painter tape yes Being that you are in Salmon arm I am surprised you even have to use boots. December 21, 2024Dec 21 I bought baby booties and used velcro strips to hold them on. I'm not sure if they will stay on for walks, but it helped my Cairns go out in the yard to pee.
