Maksym
Hi! I have a cairn puppy. I feed her by Royal Canin. However, soon I am going to visit a school for puppies, and there is a requirement that dog owners must bring some food other than the Royal Canin. Could you please give an advice what is the best choice for the first food?
Guest dog person
I would like to answer your question. However, I don't understand. "I feed her by Royal Canin. However, soon I am going to visit a school for puppies, and there is a requirement that dog owners must bring some food other than the Royal Canin" Please explain. Who are these strangers to dictate what you feed your dog? Edited February 12, 2019 by dog person
Maksym
I need to train the puppy. To do this, I need to bring some food. This food must be some ordinary food, not the Royal Canin. But I afraid that the stomach of my puppy will not digest the food that she did not eat before. Therefore I need some example of maximally loyal food. Guest dog person
You can use the Royal Canin kibble as a training treat as you know it agrees with her, no need to buy another product right now. Consult with your vet, bring a letter if need be to the training program signed by the vet saying that the pup should just have the food that agrees with her for now. That's what I would do. I would be leery of this school if they are selling or recommending specific treats. My 2 cents PS: What does maximally loyal food mean? Do they have something against Royal Canin? Does Royal Canin have a small treat product that is similar to the kibble that you could use? Edited February 12, 2019 by dog person
sanford
Although I don't have an answer to your question, I am writing this to support you in being somewhat perplexed at the directive you've been given. Perhaps you should ask for clarification from the school. The topic of food and feeding is probably the most discussed, here and on the Internet in general. It can be complicated. From what you describe, the school is adding to this problematic issue, and is not offering to address it. We all want to get our pups off to a good start, so your concern is well-founded, but I wouldn't worry that using tiny, "natural" novel treats would have enough impact to upset her system. Again, asking the school to explain further might give you the info you need. Good luck! 1 Quote FEAR THE CAIRN!
Hillscreek
Very confusing. I'd want to ask the puppy school trainer why he/she wanted you to bring a different food for treat. In addition I would ask what is meant by 'Maximally loyal food.' Good luck with puppy class. We'd love a puppy pic if you get a chance to post one. bradl
While only the OP knows for sure, my take is that the school may be asking that the trainer use ordinary kibbles as training treats, but not the dog's usual fare (possibly to give allow the "training food" to be used as a shaping treat or marker). Guessing that English is a second language I'm also guessing that "maximally loyal" may be similar to "high value." Just guessing! 1 Quote CAIRNTALK: Questions? Sam I Am
My experience with puppy classes was to provide a high value treat other than their usual fare. In our case it was small bits of dried sardine, or tiny pieces of cheese. Worked like a miracle! Never seemed to effect their tummies because of the treats being tiny. Also, not all trainers use food to motivate, or at least it is not the primary training tool. If you have concerns about the requirements of this puppy school, look around. Maybe your vet has a place he could recommend?
