Corn Niblet
Hello everyone, Our Gus now eight months old, has an unusual problem and I would like to know if anyone has ever heard of this. At around 4 or 5 months old he started to make little squeak sounds but never barked. When I told our vet she said she was not concerned, but would be more concerned if he had been able to bark and then could not any more. At 6 months old when he was neutered she looked in his throat and said she could see no abnormalities. Still not convinced, we took him to another vet for a second opinion along with a video of Gus trying to bark. She said he was probably just born this way, and that he sounded like dogs that had their vocal cords snipped. I also contacted our breeder who said he has never heard or experienced anything like this before. I listened to some you tube videos of dogs that have been de-barked and this is what he sounds like. The only things I can find on the internet about barking issues have to do with Laryngeal paralysis but his is usually with older dogs. Should I continue to not worry or should I keep trying to find an answer? I would hate to do nothing and later find out I should have done something. He is happy and healthy in every way except for this. Thanks for any input.

Corn Niblet
Only if we noticed further problems, such as any kind of choking while eating, breathing difficulties, snoring etc. So far this is a complete mystery.
bradl
It does sound puzzling! Some dogs are slow to develop a “voice” but that usually seems more of a development/maturity thing than an actual ability to bark. Quote CAIRNTALK: Questions? Idaho Cairns
Having had the dog looked at by two vets who reported no physical abnormality, what's your concern at this point? I understand how unusual this situation is and how unnerving a non-barking Cairn would be but if the dog is otherwise healthy, enjoy the ride. hheldorfer
Did the vet verify that Gus' vocal cords are intact?
Corn Niblet
Thank you all for your input. I tend to worry to much. Rocky will bark enough for the two of them.
