Clippers that can handle a Cairn coat?

Can anyone suggest a reasonably-priced type of electric clippers that can handle the Cairn coat?  Buffy had a bout of diarrhea this week (she's going to the vet today) and needs a "sanitary trim" on the backside.  She had a bath yesterday and I tried to clip her hindquarters last night, but the grooming clippers I have (Andis) are completely useless on her thick coat.  The clippers don't have to stand up to heavy usage; they just need to quickly get rid of excess hair.

I use an Oster clipper for my horses mane and fetlock hair (ankles on a horse). I used to use it also on our other Scottie, Sandie. They are tough and last forever.

I had an Oster as well (about 8 years ago).  For a potty patch on Molly (Cairn), it worked fine. When we tried to clip Mandy (poodle/terrier mix) all over, I found it heated up too quickly (or maybe I was too slow! :D). But for a quick potty patch, I thought they were good.

Wahl is the best in my opinion. I had Oster before, but the Wahls for dogs were so good I replaced a working set of human clippers with Whals and we all like them better, and they are quieter. They cost about the same as Oster.

I use them for potty touch ups the bottoms of the paws.

Both sets cut all types of fur and hair better than any set we have had.

I bought these 2 trimmers in 3/15 as trials/replacements for an ancient (4-6? y.o.) well-used Conair pet trimmer that's battery operated (1 A-batt) that I use for sanitary, feet, and ears and just about anywhere I decide needs a quick trim/touch-up.  My "original" was under $20, so I stuck w/ cheap, both trimmers were under $15 when I bought, thinking cheapo to replace, since the replacements blades are 1/2 the cost of all new.

https://www.amazon.com/Conair-Micro-Trimmer-Professional-Grooming-Lavender/dp/B003ARUE5Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468610847&sr=8-1&keywords=conair+equine+fx

https://www.amazon.com/Wahl-Professional-Animal-Trimmer-9861-900/dp/B00MNMDO3S/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468610245&sr=8-1-fkmr1&keywords=Wahl+Home+Pet+Pocket+Pro+Trimmer+%239961-900

I haven't used the Wahl as much as the Conair because it seemed a little (very little) noisier and not 'quite as sharp' as the Conair, but I did put it to a tough job, and truthfully it may actually be as good in my normal everyday use.  I really feel like it hasn't gotten a fair trial, yet; and maybe this particular blade isn't as sharp as it should be.

But the Conair has handled everything I've done with it and um, yeah, it can handle messy poop chutes.  I just take the blades off later and give them a good wash & lube if they don't clean up with a heavy spray of lube and tissue wipe-off.  Cool thing about both of these is they cut such a narrow path that you can keep a trimmed 'chute' and side hair will sort of hide the area.  Um, so far I haven't had so messy that the 'side' hair also got messy & needed a trim.  And these trimmers aren't showing signs of needing replacing yet.  [Usually 2 cairns here; probably used every 2 wks; maybe more, depending on whatever.....]

Somewhere on this forum I wrote about these little palm sized battery trimmers and I'm still sold on them for convenience and ease of use, and they never cut/nick.  They do come with clip-on 'spacers' but if you angle those wrong they'll poke, so I just use 'em bare; they definitely don't trim so close to give razor burn.  As far as handling coat, they haven't failed me on any coat I've put them to unless it was on big thick mats that I shouldn't have even been trying with those trimmers (I've also have an A-5, with a selection of blades).  Trimming in the direction of coat-growth is much faster than against, even if you have to make 2 passes to trim as close as you want/need.

[And it turns out the 'retired' ancient trimmer, does an excellent de-fuzzing job on clothes & blankets B)]

Many thanks to all of you for your suggestions!  I'll be checking all of them out online this weekend.

I saw Buffy gobble something up while we were walking through the alley on Wednesday evening and I think this is probably the cause of her diarrhea (and gas . . . very, very bad gas).  DH took Buffy to the vet today.  The vet agreed that it was probably something she ate because Buffy seems fine in every other way.  We got a prescription for a diarrhea med; we gave her one dose so far and she seems better this evening.  At least she is now producing something *resembling* normal poop.

Thanks for your concern!

P.S.  And now, thanks to Terrier Lover, I know what 'fetlocks' are!:P

My Wahl clipper is great for any trimming up I need to do.  I use it on their bellies quite a bit to keep them from getting those dirty "boy" bellies, as I call them.  They also work well for "personal" or sanitary trims.  They do make some noise but it doesn't seem to bother them.  I'm probably biased toward Wahl clippers, they're based in my hometown and I know lots of people who have worked there.  They're a good company and do a lot for the community.

I have a small battery clipper that I use for ears sometimes.  It's just a cheaply but has hung in there for a long time.  I think I got it at Walmart.

So after reading this post, I went to our farmer's co-op to buy an elk antler for the Labrador and entered the "spin the wheel" contest they were having!  I won the small battery operated Wahl clippers - cute and quiet.  When I got home I tried them out on Pepper's hairy feet and they worked like a charm!!! Yay!!!

Good grief, I had forgotten all about this post and never followed up.:shy:

I found a battery-operated, $10 Oster clipper at Wal-Mart and figured I couldn't go wrong.  Sure enough, it does the job!  Buffy doesn't like it, of course, but I explained the importance of personal grooming to her.:P

If Buffy is anything like Addie, that explanation went in one ear and out the other, to be replaced with continued rage over the indignity.

Yes all of the above. Rosie had a clip and a bath this morning. She looks like she has been through a chicken plucker machine. After I did her face with the number ten blade, I forgot to put the extender on the blade and started off on one side before before realizing what I was doing.  So now one side of her has a Scottie skirt the other not so much.....

Rosie here.....well isn't that just Dandy mum. I am embarrassed to even go into the back yard. May your hairdresser do the same to you!
