meet Daisy..

I had seen a posting that a local animal shelter had a cairn, and since I've been soooo happy with my 9 year old Cairn, Maggie, whom I adopted last year from a shelter....I was able to talk my wife into letting us possibly take in another one.

My wife went to the pound while I was at work yesterday and checked it out. I think my wife was a little unsure if adopting a second dog was a good idea in the first place and I doubted this dog would winn her over.....

Well, as it turns out the poor dog had been there a while. She had came in skinny, malnutritioned, she had an ear infection, and half her hair was missing from a skin problem. The shelter did what they could, (but had no hot water etc. budget cuts has left them seriously underfunded), and had got a vet to treat her ears and skin infection. But now She was dirty and had feces stuck to her hind legs.

Because she also had a large tumor like growth on her hind quarter, and she was not spayed, which she would need someone to pay for before they would let her be adopted as it's their policy, she was looking pretty unadoptable.

My wife called me and said that she could just not leave that poor, sweet dog there...sooo....she paid the adoption fee, agreed to pay to have the dog taken to a vet for spaying, complete grooming (nails, teeth, hair...whatever they could do)  and also agreed to have the large lump removed (which the vet said was benign)...

...I was delighted with the news, as I would have done the same thing! My wife is the best!

We just got her home tonight where she is resting in her new bed.  She looks much better (even though her hair is sooooo short). She has stiches on her hind quarters and from the spaying, so I'm sure the poor girl doesn't feel well. We are letting her rest as much as possible and expect recovery to take a few weeks.

Interestingly, Maggie, who normally barks and growls at other dogs to the point of viciousness...greeted Daisy like a long lost pal and has been happily sniffing and wagging her tail as if she's just waiting for this new pal to feel better so they can play. Me and my wife are AMAZED at how well behaved Maggie has been to this new girl!!

I'll keep posting progress.

Stupendous news!  You and your wife are wonderful people for bringing this girl home and taking such good care of her.  Daisy will blossom under your care and Maggie will have a well-matched playmate.

This is the best news I've heard all day.  Can't wait to see more pics and hear stories of life with Daisy.

That is TERRIFIC! Daisy looks like she is not sure what is coming her way next - poor little gal. How old do you think Daisy is? I bet Daisy is thinking about Maggie. She probably doesn't want to sleep because she's afraid her good luck might be a dream. I can't wait for more progress reports. Thank you guys for opening your hearts and home again. Maggie and Daisy has a nice ring to it. :)

Aww, poor Daisy, sounds like she's been through the ringer! SO glad you and your wife were able to really rescue her from her old, horrid life. Looking forward to hearing lots of tales of Daisy and Maggie having fun together, once Daisy is all better.

Daisy is a beautiful girl-congratulations on your new member of the household.

That was a pretty big chasm to jump but I'm betting you will be rewarded for your leap of faith.  These older Cairns just seem to have the ability to sense and wisdom to know when they are in safe loving hands.  Maggie's reaction was probably your strongest clue about how good your decision was to take in this rescue.  Bless you for doing this.

That is great news. Nothing better than adding a new Cairn to the forum.

Thanks, all for the support. We think that Daisy is about 5 or 6 years old.

I'm sitting her next to my Addie crying. Thank you SO much for rescuing this poor (but absolutely lovely and sweet-looking) little girl. You made a huge commitment and I trust it will be rewarded by a grateful friend once she finds her feet. I can't wait to hear all about Daisy's adventures with Maggie.

What a wonderful story!  Thank-you for giving Daisy a home.  I hope you have many happy years, many happy adventures together.

Who rescued whom?

Daisy seems to be feeling better. She's anxious to go on walks. But, she seems really itchy and is scatching a lot. Her belly looks a little pink. Some real red marks where she's scatching. A little bit of diarhea also.

Any suggestion? She's freshly bathed and clipped from the vet, and since she has stitches we can't bathe her for two weeks.

I feel bad that her skin is so irritated.
