My mom ruining the cairn tradition...

Pretty pathetic event just happened today, all of a sudden fonzy was out in the backyard chasing birds.... fonzy was like barking kinda loud and making a huge scene outside (Cairns are supposed to do this am I right?) They HUNT..... he was hunting a bird, BIG Freaking DEAL.

Well, all of my sudden my mom freaks out and starts yelling at me to grab fonzy... WHILE fonzy was freaking out and running all around the YARD having a blast!!!!

I was sitting there watching fonzy running around and hunting some bird I think or something and it was pure awesomeness watching my fonzy do that!!! It felt so cool to see him go run and chase stuff/etc, am I right doesn't it feel kinda good to see something like that happen? :D Well anyway, my MOM was freaking out and yelling at me and screaming literally "HE"S GONNA KILL A BIRD" GRAB HIM!!!!!

I totally went off on my mom and told her to stop yelling so loud, she was yelling like somone was dying or something, and the whole neighbourhood probably could hear her.

it was sickening letting my mom destroy what cairns do best, shame on her. It pissed me off.

thanks for letting me share this, I am pretty sad that my dog cant even go hunt some little critters in the backyard, who cares if it's a little bird? cairn gotta hunt let them hunt.... it's what they do, she is ruining the breed if she continues to stop him do this, and eventually ruin the cairn breed in hundreds of years. She should be ashamed of herself.

Cant wait until I move out.. im bringing fonzy with me for sure... man parents freak out sometimes!

Well I must admit I would be the same as your mum...I know it's in their nature to do this, but I can't stand to watch another animal being killed. Jock has killed mice in our back yard and it happens so fast you don't even have time to blink. Do I like it..well no not really, but I accept it. As much as jock and I hate birds like magpies or crows ( and to his disgust he can never catch them as they are just to fast and smart) it would still upset me if I witnessed jock killing one. So Newman give your mum some slack, I understand where she is coming from :)

we all evolve. even cairns. they've learned to live indoors, eat kibble, and wear sweaters. i believe they are destined for even greater things. lions will lie down with lambs and eat straw. cairns will smile while birds roost on their heads.

some cairns will kill birds, other cairns just like to flush them - i too enjoy seeing a cairn in action - i wonder if fonzy would enjoy earthdog - if i'm not mistaken, you're in the pacific northwest? - there's a group of people there who are very involved in earthdog and other activities with their cairns

I used to try to stop Ozzy from chasing birds, motorcycles, loud trucks, and whatever else caught his attention. He have a fenced yard so he's safe, but I didn't want his barking to annoy the neighbors or his chasing to scare whoever passed by. I gave up and let him go for it now. Funny thing is that everyone who walks by and gets "chased" think it's funny as h@}}. He's cute as a button and can't hurt anyone from inside his fence. They are fun to watch. :)

HAHAAH Same for us!

When the big garbage truck drives by in the apartments behind the fence in the backyard, I let fonzy out of the house just to watch him run 200mph's towards the fence in "hunting" mode, my grandma get's mad... but I try to ignore her and just enjoy what the cairn does best...I love watching it!!!!!!! It's like I feel like I am in heaven when I watch him do that kind of stuff, time goes by so fast. (Weird I know but hope u understand)

Yeah well I was closer to fonzy then my mom was and I never even seen a bird!!! but I do agree, I guess my mom does deserve a little bit of slack but I think it was a birds nest or something now that I talked to my mom... but I don't really care to be honest, when a cairn wants to hunt, let the dang thing hunt!!!!!!!! but I agree with you, I shouldn't of gotten mad at my mom but she was freaking out for no reason!! (in my opinion)

I'm sure he'd have fun. Here's an AKC brief summary of each level. The actual rules (PDF) used to conduct the test, and each of the levels.

Here's a random short youtube I found that gives a sense of the Introduction to Quarry test. "Intro" is where you'd start a dog with no experience at all.

(hope that works - youtube is blocked at work -- I'll fix at home tonight if necessary)

If your dog successfully enters the tunnel and shows interest in the rats, you'd probably sign up to try the next level, Junior. Junior is significantly more challenging than Intro. We have some Junior tests, some weekends, where not one single dog passes. Other times there will be a handful of dogs that pass. There are many factors involved but the net of it is that it's a big jump from a 10 foot tunnel to a 30 foot tunnel with a shorter time limit and stricter rules about how the dog must work.

You will need Fonzy's AKC registration to enter him in a test. If he's not registered, you'll need to get a "PAL" number. Some form of AKC registration is required or the test-giving club cannot accept the entry.

We love earthdog tests and will be working one this weekend. (As well as entering most of the dogs -- all but Haggis, who is retired -- in one or more tests).

Fonzy wont even fit through that hole! lol!

Thanks for the information, I will be talking to this with my mom hopefully and we'll pay the 35$ to get him registered.

We actually bought fonzy from a family who commited suicide 2weeks after we bought fonzy from there breeding house in their backyard, so we have no way of getting papers for him.

He was actually outside catching BEES for heaven's sake he could catch some rats no problem, fonzy is a boss.

Thanks for the information

Hey Fonzy, make sure you and your special person give licks and hugs to Mom on Sunday

Then go earthdogging and get after those rats.:twisted:
