Newman Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Okay! we Weighed our cute little cairn Fonzerella!!! And he came out 25.5LBS!!!! He is not Fat at all! he is pure muscle, very athletic also, Lol is this normal? I think we got one of the biggest cairns in the world. He is such a beast, I am so glad they live 10+Years, I hope he never passes, this dog is a gift from heaven. But my Queston is, how much does your dog weigh? Click to show the full size image!
Dempsy's Mom Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Hmmm. I think Demps weighed around 22. Now I don't know if I believe it's all muscle on Fonzy .... after all those ears are prreetty big. Love them. Elsie, Max, Meeko & Lori
Kathryn Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Allie is 16 pounds, and T Bone is 14. We keep them trim, and I think they are pretty standard. That said, there is another cairn in the neighborhood that weighs about 25, and he is NOT fat at all, but really quite solid and much bigger than our two. If you can still feel his ribs, he is probably okay.
lindasue Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Pegi was just at the vet for some shots and weighed in at 22; can still feel ribs but I think she's a little chunky. When my girls leave for college in the fall I am sure the weight will drop considerably....no more snacking from their plates! Linda & Pegi

Pepper Bug's Mom Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Pepper weighed in at 14 lb 7 oz last week at the vet - she just turned 9 months - tough as nails at the dog park and full of energy! She is such a GOOD little girl - she really wants to please me and loves her tennis ball chases. She won't bring them back, but that's OK - no fighting over the ball at the dog park! Pepper's Mom
Meggie Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Yesterday Hub weighed in at 12.5 which is down a pound. But the vet said he's perfectly lean, and since he has access to food all day and has no health issues, Hubble has "decided" to be leaner than when he was a puppy I guess I have a dainty cairn.
beccadiane374 Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Tanner weighs 17 pounds & the vet has always been happy with his weight. He's fed twice a day & gets plenty of exercise. Becky & Tanner
Hawkeye Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Bailey weighs 15 lbs and Radar is 13 (macho) lbs.
_whits_ Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 The vet weighed Addie today. Almost 10 months and 16.56 pounds. If the vet says your dog's weight is healthy, it's healthy. Cairns come in all sizes it seems. Addie's mom and dad were very little (although a lot of that had to do with them being rescued from a puppy mill) so I was certain Addie would top out at 12 pounds. And now my little maniac is 16! She was the runt, so I can only imagine how big her brothers are. Tuesday Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Murphy my UN-neutered boy is 17 pounds and I think he look scrawny in the rump. He does have good proportions. He'll be getting neutered this Spring, so I suspect he'll pudge up a teeny tiny bit, though we'll cut back on his food.
claymike Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Rudy weighed in at 13 lbs today and is just a little over 5 months old now. Breeder said he would not get over 14 lbs. Ha ha ya right, vet said he probably will get to around 18 lbs
Meggie Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Wow Did I get a tea cup cairn? Hub weighs less than a 5 month old puppy He's like that one short kid in school, I guess!
Idaho Cairns Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Nope--13lbs for a female and 14lbs for a male Cairn is the "standard". In my experience those ideals aren't met across the spectrum of Cairns tho--they tend to be heavier than the standard. Little chow hounds tend to pork out a bit.
bradl Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Stella is 12 lbs at age 7. Echo around 14 lbs at age 10. Haggis is 16 lbs but should be 17 lbs, but he's old and beginning to waste CAIRNTALK: Questions? Lynn in TN Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 I must have a very small Cairn too! The last time I had Kelly weighed was December 21 she weighed in at 10.7 pounds and was a little over 8 months. I need to take her and have her weighed again. She will be a year old the middle of April.
janis Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Kirby weights 28# on our scale, but he is also 22 inches long. I got extra cairn for my money!
Ivy & Lucy's Mom Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Ivy is 19 lbs. and the vet is happy with her weight. My last cairn was only 12lbs. He was quite a bit smaller than Ivy though.

bradl Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Thanks. If we live long enough ourselves, we too will get a bit frail as we age. It's nature's way... I hope I'm as sporty and fun as he is at the equivalent age! CAIRNTALK: Questions? Meggie Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 When animals get to that point, they earn the nickname Gramps or Nana in our house Takes the sting out a bit.
jo_ Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Looks like ours are on the heavier side...Eddie is about 18 lbs and Jagger is 21 lbs. Jagger's a solid tank and could possibly lose a pound or two, but Eddie's very lean, he's just longer and taller than Jags. Jo, Jagger & Eddie
TazTalk Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 If we live long enough ourselves, we too will get a bit frail as we age. It's nature's way... I hope I'm as sporty and fun as he is at the equivalent age! I agree!! Same here with an older, frail dog - when I pick up 16 year old Gypsy, she feels hollow to me. (probably about 16 lbs now). When I hoist up Taz (and strain my back!) - it's like picking up a sack of bricks. He's about 21 very muscular lbs.
tlwtheq Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Thanks. If we live long enough ourselves, we too will get a bit frail as we age. It's nature's way... I hope I'm as sporty and fun as he is at the equivalent age! 'Tis true. Holdsworth spent most of his adult life at 22 lbs. When he passed to RB he weighed 10.5. Present crew: Olie 20 lbs, Ted 17 lbs, Sweet Pea 14.5 lbs. They all have the same father, but Olie's mother was much larger than the twins' mom. Max and Nelly
Hillscreek Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I'm really surprised at the wide range of weights Cairns can be. Although I guess that's true of other breeds also. I've owned several working type retrievers and seen labs and goldens that no way could they get in a duck boat or streak out to bring a bird back. Angus just turned six months and weighs 12 lbs. A lean pup. And I agree - it's their Cairn nature we want to see most of all so lively, smart, inventive, friendly but also fierce and brave when they need to be.
