Autumn & Lola Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Hi all! Do any of you use dog booties in rainy/cold weather? I never thought of using them before, but the snow/wet/muddy weather here makes for one filthy dog. It is driving my husband crazy, as every single time Lola goes out, we have to wash her feet and legs. It is starting to take up quite a bit of time! If we don't cath her in time, she gets the (very light) carpet filthy. We will eventually tear up the carpet, but for now, I'd like a less expensive option. I told him I thought some people on here have used booties on their dogs for various reasons and he is willing to give them a go. If you use them, what brand do you recommend and what size did you get? Thank you!
_whits_ Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Addie has these: http://www.ultrapaws...ductinfo/301TP/ Addie is a 16 pound Cairn, and she wears size small. But there's a great little sizer on the site that shows what size to get based on how big your dog's feet are (you use a ruler). She doesn't love them, but will tolerate them if it means getting a walk on ice, and on deicer salt. I learned that I wait to put them on until right before we go out, and I have to strap them on as tight as possible. They also have other brands. http://www.ultrapaws...ts_usechart.asp "as far as i am concerned cairns are the original spirit from which all terriers spring, and all terriers are cairns very deep down inside." pkcrossley
pindrop Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Every time I remember my previous dog and her dog booties I can't help but laugh. She was so ungainly and hated them as she couldn't feel the ground beneath her feet and would walk like each leg was independant of one another. But as she liked to walk with us in the woods when we went cross country skiing it was a necessary evil. Since then I have not subjected my dogs to booties - not because I don't believe they work but I would have a hard time getting out the door without killing myself laughing. I hope that whatever you get works for you. Husband and dog missing ...25 cents reward for dog
cairnzma Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 We have some my daughter bought a few yrs ago for her minature poodle but after a few times she gave up cause one always managed to come off and it was time consuming to put them on. unless you develop an art to getting them on I see it as more work then just wiping paws off and then have some baby wipes handy to get the rest of the mud off. we have 4 dogs so you dont have to tell me about frustration! when its muddy out I get wild with all the dog paw wiping! this mean mommy usually limits the trips out and where they will walk when it gets really bad.
Sam I Am Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Our climate in this cold snowy northern location requires that a lot of dogs need boots to go for a walk. When it reaches -30 Celcius Jock has to have boots put on just to go outside and do his business. If not, he just stands on one spot with as many legs off the ground that he can manage. He really hates them and acts like a beaten dog when they are being put on. Once outside he forgets about them and carries on. I found the ones that work the best are the soft felt boots with velcro straps on them. The actual "boot" ones seem to really restrict moment and just look plain akward Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened. - Anatole France Adventures with Sam &Rosie
josie&holly Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Sorry but I know that in some parts of US/Canada it is extremely cold and boots on dog are good idea but I think here it is not severe enough......................Holly will not wear a coat so sure she would not wear boots! However, I do see a Westie out walking in what I think is this [i have the raincoat they make for Holly] http://www.petplanet...id=126&pg_id=99 and there is also one by this firm - I have a friend who has the ordinary dog coat from this firm http://www.equafleec.../dog_suits.html Something like that would give some protection to underneath and legs anyhow. I regularly wipe Holly when we come in especially this last week with snow on ground as most of mess is on her underbody and legs rather than feet. I have also seen this advertised in dog magazines http://www.pawplunger.com/ to help with cleaning paws and can be obtained from various places including Amazon.co.uk They have some booties on Amazon.co.uk www.cairnterriertalk.co.uk
Idaho Cairns Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 We keep large towels available near the door to give the girls a good rub down under these situations. I really don't know of a way to keep their undercarriages clean under wet circumstances, it just isn't the paws that are dirty and wet but their chests and bellies so before they hit the carpeted floors or the wood floors they get towled off.
Nena Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Also use the ultra paws durable dog boot. they are made from tires and have two straps of velcro to keep them on. they really work. Nena can't stand to walk in weather under 20 degrees or in salted roads. She just had them on her walk this morning and had a great time. They are padded inside so they are comfortable. I have tried other cheep ones but they come right off. Could not go on walks in cold weather without them. they also make a wax called mushers secret. I have not tried it but plan to. it would be easier than boots cairn terriers leave pawprints on our lives
