How Heavy

OK Oliver is almost 7 months old now. He just got neutered 2 weeks ago and he weighed in at a whopping 16lbs already!

He is not fat at all, the vet said he is very healthy. He doesn't seem like he is to big (although he towered over my neighbors 4 yr old Westie already) His father was a big dog but his mother was petite.

We feed him twice a day about 1-1/3 cups total for the day and 2-3 treats. All treats and food are Holistic and Organic and he gets no "people" food. When you pick him up he feels like a brick, I guess it may just be muscle weight as muscle weighs more then fat.

Just wondering what the "normal" weight is for a full grown male.

Thanks!

Oliver is so cute. I was worried about Demps at 20#, but he holds steady and is such a husky built little brick that I have resigned to 20# is ok. Demps is 3.

I dont think it matters what his weight is as long as he isnt overly chubby and is healthy. Jock is 21 lbs and under a thin layer of fat I feel a rib cage... I wish I could say the same thing about myself :P

Max is about 18 months. He's 21 pounds. He's a solid boy!

Trotter leveled off at about 18 lbs, but since he's been diagnosed with diabetes (in March) our vet likes to keep him right around 16. He is a bit smaller then other cairns we know.

Kirby weighed #22 at his visit - but he is also a little longer than breed standard. Not fat, very fast on his four feet and very well muscled

Well I think I got a tea cup Cairn :crybaby: He is as long as he is tall a walking brick at 3.6 lbs. When we were on a walk the other day a neighbor came running out and asked what it was. Told him it is a barking hamster, breeder says he will be 14 lbs but for now the wind blows him over.

Robby is a little over 13 lbs at 4 years old.My dad's cairn MacDuff is 5 years and around 20 lbs .Both are fit dogs ,Mac is just bigger.

Ditto on the :) for the "barking hamster."

Enjoy your hamster, because, well, you'll see!

PS - Don't feed after midnight, or get water him....

 too funny about the barking hamster!!

Gremlin might have to go on my list of "good dog names" too!

I will see if he grew Tuesday when he goes to the vet. I should have named him Harpo, he has this stupid little squeak toy in his crate that he hates. EXCEPT when he wants needs to go out in the morning, he keeps stepping on the dang thing until you take him out.

Taz goes about 21lb. He's extemely dense and solidly built. I like the brick description - that definitely fits!

Gypsy (almost 16 yrs old) looks about the same size (same frame) but probably weighs in at about 15 now. She actually feels "hollow" if you pick her up after Taz.

Addie is a week away from 8 months old and weighs 14 pounds. She is larger than I expected, being the runt of a litter born from a malnourished rescued puppymill mom. I can't imagine what how big her brothers must be. Her vet thinks she might gain a pound or two more as she fills out.

I spend half my time being amazed at how big she is compared to when I got her and compared to what I expected, and the other half amazed at how small she seems.

Finn is almost 17 months, goes about 16-17 lbs. Who knows what he really weighs: he won't stand still long enough to get weighed properly. The vet told us at his last visit that he was at the upper end of what he should weigh (that was 2 months ago) & we should keep up what we're doing. Dr. said these dogs tend to get a bit fat & with the length, it's best not to put too much weight on the frame. Based on what the AKC says is the current breed standard, Finn is right on with length & height. I'm always amazed at the way these dogs look-- the long bodies, the short, short legs, all the hair, the cute face & the devil in their eyes.

I am amazed at how well Haggis goes on the scales! Whenever I take Holly to Vets and try weighing her I get her on them and immediately she jumps off and it then takes about 3 attempts to get her weight!

[last September I think after the 3 attempts we decided she weighed just under 9 kilo but I have cut her down a bit since then!]

I havent looked at this forum for quite a while. Our 2 year old Piper has grown up to be quite a handful..last vet visit weighed in at 19 lbs! She is very healthy and full of energy and strong as an ox...I call her "sleddog" when we take our morning walks...thank God for harnesses!!!

We recently boarded her with a dog breeder when we took a trip. When we came back to pick her up the breeder told us Piper needed to go on a diet and lose about 3-4 lbs! Our vet hadnt told us to put her on a diet, but since then..about a month ago...we have cut back on the food, the treats etc and she has lost 1 lb, maybe more. She is a very muscular little gal and can run from morning till nite so we have never thought of her as "fat: . Now i see this thread of messages and am starting to wonder if her weight is more because she is muscular and big boned vs being fat.

My wife and I had developed the bad habit of feeding her small amounts of table food which Im sure contributed to her weight gain, but we have stopped that now. I would add a picture but they all seem to be too large for the allowable space. She is a mischievous cutie!

Pegi is also 20 lbs - vet says she's fine. We refer to her as "big boned"....
