Friend System - Turn it Off?

One of the features that just sort of came along with a forum upgrade a few versions back was the friend system. I don't actually use it, but I notice that some do. My question is primarily for those who do use it - do you use it with purpose, such that you would be unhappy if I were to turn it off?
