josie&holly Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 Today it is Bonfire Night in UK to celebrate Fawkes trying to blow up Parliament many years ago. So people have been setting off fireworks and upsetting Holly [and other peoples dogs] each evening for past 8 days. Holly will not go out to do anything if the fireworks are going off. However, this year whilst inside and she hears them she has decided to compete with them for noise! So every evening Holly is barking like mad for ages regardless of how loud I put the TV....................... I am hoping my next door neighbour cannot hear her but it is driving me mad not to mention Holly herself! I bought some stuff [Kalm Aid] from Vet that is suposed to calm her down but has not taken any effect. I just wish that firework sales were regulated more strongly and that they could not be bought until the day before and only used on the one day. So I am expecting a noisy evening tonight even though it is raining! www.cairnterriertalk.co.uk
pkcrossley Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 yes, i know exactly what you mean. i don't think there is a real solution other than to just tough it out (maybe you can explain that to the neighbors...) fond memories of guy fawkes day, for americans it is fourth of july and halloween all in one. both terrible holidays for alert little dogs, so you have it double strength.
ScruffynMag Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 Same here, i'm from the UK and I'm fed up with the fireworks and it's been the last 10 days in this area that they've been letting them off. I was thinking if this noise happens every night for another 10 days, Scruffy may begin to think it's a way of life or I might be driven completely bonkers!! One of my friends little dogs trembles and makes himself sick with the fear of the loud banging sounds, it's awful to see him like this. Scruffy just barks his fool head off at them but gets agitated too so I have to turn the TV up loud but he still hears the bangs www.cairnterriertalk.co.uk
Lynn in TN Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 I can understand how you all feel. They lifted the fireworks ban in our area this year and I was happy about it at first. I think it is a great to shoot fireworks with your children. We had several inconsiderate people all over the County that thought shooting them off for 4 weeks straight until 4 am was a good idea. No one got any sleep and we had to clean our yards every morning we would pick up a bag full of the firework trash. Now the County is getting ready to vote to make them illegal again. It kinda makes me mad that the inconsiderate always seems to ruin it for the rest of us. I like fireworks in moderation. I think they are beautiful, but not from 7:30pm until 4am for 4 weeks.
pindrop Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 Thank goodness I live in Maine where it is prohibitive to buy fireworks. Unfortunately, not so for our neighboring states. Although the towns must have a permit to have any fireworks this is usually rare as in July 4th so rest of the year is usually peaceful. I have no idea what I would do if it was any longer as Layla too will bark her head off when they do go off - that and thunder. Husband and dog missing ...25 cents reward for dog
Islander Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 I guess I am one of the lucky few with an insensitive dog! Halloween is firecracker time here; it used to be totally insane for weeks. Now with a ban on sales of fireworks for the last few years it is much, much calmer. Still some going off for a few nights before, during and after the 31st. However, Gus pays no attention whatsoever to that kind of noise. We rarely have thunderstorms here on the coast, but one of the places we go hiking is near a shooting range. The big huge dog we hike with gets very nervous if we hear gunshots and just wants to go back to the car, but Gus is totally blasé!
josie&holly Posted November 5, 2011 Author Posted November 5, 2011 Well it looks as if we will have a late night as I thought it had quietened down but some more nearer firreworks started and are continuing.................... I opened back door for Holly to go out and she walked back inside looking at me as if to say she thought I was stupid to suggest that she went out when there was all that banging going on! So she will have to hold her wees for a little longer! I am fed up of the noise myself never mind Holly! www.cairnterriertalk.co.uk
