Sassy and I dodge a falling tree

Our usual after work evening walk turned into a little scary excitement this evening.

We usually go down one side of the street and come back up the other. But tonight there were people coming up the side we normally start out on. So we went down the return side. It was also windy with an approaching rain storm. Leaves blowing through the air across the whole width of the street and trees bending with the wind. Trees as tall as 70 feet.

With the wind blowing Sassy was pretty excited and leap frog running from one sniff spot to the other and just being silly.

So we get down to our turn and cross over spot and she heads back the way we came sniffing hard, so we didn't cross. She's looking for a place to do #2. As I am waiting on her the wind came up hard, really hard, but it wasn't at ground level, it was at about 40 ft or so. I am watching Sassy and I hear a very loud crack, this of course is a tree on the other side of street that we would have returned on had Sassy not gone backwards. The top of the tree came crashing down and landed about 50 feet from its base laying across the sidewalk we would have been on and most the width of the street. I was standing about 10 feet from its farthest reach on the opposite side of the street, Sassy a little further away still sniffing.

Needless to say, Sassy decided that we could make another #2 attempt later and I agreed.

Thankfully there were no cars in the area at that moment, although there was guy on his cell phone on the same side of the street as the tree, although he was about 20 feet to the side of where it landed.

I just dawned on me that Sassy probably saved our lives this evening. Good girl!!!

Taking Sassy for a walk is really putting your life on a limb. :) I can't believe that Sassy waited for #2 - I think I would of takin' it. I bet there were lots of hugs, kisses and treats when you guys got home. Good dog Sassy!!

If she knew, how come she didn't just come right out and say so like Lassie would to Timmy?

Arf Arf (Translation: Now Timmy in about 5 minutes the top of that huge tree you see across the street is going to come crashing down because of a huge burst of wind, so I suggest that we stay put and even though it will be close, we will be safe right where we are. OK? I'll be right over here looking for a place to poop. End translation)

Is it possible that only Lassie would do that because Lassie was really a boy? :D Girls are just too subtle sometimes, they like to have their little inside jokes.

Just wanted to show you what the mess looks like now. Keep in mind that it has been dragged out of the street and chopped up, it was much more intimidating last evening. Also note at the end that Sassy takes advantage of me shooting video to go grab herself a snack of her favorite street treat, a clump of grass left behind by a lawn mower. The little stinker.
