I am Eleven

It was my birthday this month, so of course we had a special event, rented the ballroom at the Ritz Carlton in Boston, I had to shake many hands, including the mayor, very boring. There was a parade afterward, tangled up the traffic somewhat.

I am a lucky man and I know it. Three months ago I was in so much pain I cried all the time, and then something happened that made my mom and everybody around me get very quiet, but we did the weird thing with the faraway doctors where I had two days every day, one horrible and starving and one starting with a hamburger and a lot of laughing. I remember all my fellow patients from the clinic, and I have a feeling that some of them are already not around. But I am. I haven't felt this good for a couple of years. The doctor told my mom I might lose my hearing but that didn't happen. I hear what I want to hear, like always. My hair turned different colors and now I have more gray than red, but the ladies at the ball told me I look handsome. I don't take any meds at all, didn't need too many medicines at any point, really, and that is all good, since if I need them, as mom says, "later," they will be there. And the brain doctor told my mom that my disks are outstanding for a man of my age, so I don't even have to be old-man careful. I did learn to use the ramp on and off the bed some time ago, I guess it is pretty convenient, and my mom says she feels better if I use it, to avoid as much stress as possible on the old spine, as she always says, "later." But I am so bouncy and full of energy that sometimes I just levitate onto the bed before I remember the fool thing.

My mom says if I am a very lucky boy I will be around to have the world wish me a happy twelfth birthday too. But we aren't worrying about that. Every day is nice for me now and I stick real close to my family.
