Mom came home tonight and told me that cousin Trevor died last night. I couldn't believe it. I said, "Cousin Trevor died!! How did he die mom?" "He had a heartattack Demps." "A heartattack? What's a heartattack mom?" Mom told me that that's when something goes wrong with your heart and it stops beating. "I can't believe that Trevor is dead mom. I won't ever see him again?" "No Demps. Cousin Trevor will not be giving you anymore wheelbarrel races across the livingroom. No more chases or playing catch, but you will always have memories of Trevor. And I wouldn't be surprised if some day you will have a new cousin." "A NEW COUSIN! I don't want a new cousin mom." "Oh my Demps. A new cousin will never replace cousin Trevor. They will just be a new member of the family. Say Demps. Tomorrow will be your 3rd birthday and we need to celebrate." "My birthday! I don't want to celebrate mom." "I know Demps - it feels strange to celebrate when tragedy strikes and your heart is heavy - but you are special & your life is special & Trevor would want you to keep on having fun, keep on living life, keep on loving Pepper, Digger, kitties and yes, even a new cousin. ...... ok Demps, what do you say if tonight we feel sad, think of Trevor and his family, but tomorrow we celebrate you?" "Ok mom. Can we go up and lay in bed? Will you bring me a bully stick and a little duck treat? Will you rub my tummy and scratch me all over? Maybe have a little tug-o-war." "Yes Demps. We can do that for as long as you want."
