Kelly the lap dog

They say on most websites and in most books Cairns are not lap dogs. Kelly is a lot. She loves to curl up with us on the couch and sometimes whines if we don't let her join us. In this picture my son had gotten out of the shower and was laying on the couch and Kelly had to join him. My oldest son thought it was so cute and grabbed the camera and snapped. You have to be quick with the camera because she wants to play with it.post-5242-0-06258400-1318083408_thumb.jp

That is cute. Notice Kelly is on the pillow with him. They know how to get comfortable.

Not only does she have a pillow behind her but a blankie too. She is so cute and so is your son with that sorta shy grin. She's growing up fast!

I love seeing Cairns and children together. Even tho all the standard definitions of Cairns in the Breed Books clearly state that Cairns are good with children I have often seen comments made that the Cairns were too high strung, stubborn, unpredictable to be trusted around little ones. That has been counter to every experience I have had with Cairns over the years. Ours have always adored children, tolerated rough play, protected, and hung with our grand children--almost to the exclusion of the adults around. There seems to be a kinship between Cairns and kids that is wonderful and this picture just reinforces why families with youngsters should consider a Cairn as a companion dog for kids.

Kelly sure has grown up these last few months--that all ears and legs puppy has turned into quite a lovely little girl, she has that sharp but soft Cairn look, that "foxy" look we like. My goodness to think of all the visits to the breeders, the worry about the decision, the hand holding--what do you think now about your choice??????

You're not alone. Cracker is a lap dog too. That was one of my biggest fears about getting a Cairn because I read they weren't lap dogs and I wanted a lap dog like my Westie was. However, I can honestly say that Cracker is MORE of a lap dog than Toot was! The minute I sit down, he jumps up in my lap. If I get up, he follows me. I will even admit this to you guys (LOL).....if I go to the restroom, he lays on my feet! He has to be right on, under, or beside me at all times. He always snuggles up in my lap if I'm watching TV and he wants me to cradle him in my arms like a baby right before bed. OHHHH! The most recent thing - he takes his paw and tries to pick my hand up if he wants me to scratch or rub him.

Love, love LOVE that photo! I so agree with Idaho! Divot has been such a wonderful dog with all kids and babies! My 6 month old niece has gotten a good grip on his face fur and refused to let go a couple of times. I know it had to hurt him. He simply licked her and sat still until we could get her little hands to let go.

Oh, and Divot is a lap dog, too! I love that about him.

Idaho I'll have to say she is great with children. I think a lot of the negative stuff they say about Cairns isn't true, or it isn't of Kelly any way. You can do anything to her you want to, pull her tail, her ears just about anything and she doesn't react badly to it. She adjusts to how we are each day. If we feel energetic she is. If we want to lay on the couch most of the day she does too. I have never really had a dog like her before. She tends to take on my mood for the day. Maybe it is because I'm the first person each day to interact with her.

I also love that foxy look she has now. She gets prettier every day. We enjoy having her company. I would take another one in a heartbeat.

We did think that she would be bigger than she is though. She is 25 weeks and weighs 9 1/2 pounds. That is not a problem though.

I believe this to be the best breed for our family and we are so happy with her. Thank you all for the wonderful things you have said about her and my son. I'll have to agree they are both so cute.

Max isn't a lap dog per say, but loves to be close to us. She's forever on the back of the couch behind our heads or right next to us laying down. He also likes to cuddle when I take a nap.

Titan at this point hasn't taken to being a lap dog. He's kind of a free spirit, in general, and may never. We're still in the bonding stage I suppose, since we adopted him 4 months ago at 2 years old. He's very slowly adapting to his new family. We've had a female Cairn that we raised from pup who never bonded to us like the male we had. Their personalities are all quite different, like humans in that regard. Titan might never be the cuddlepup, but he's got so many other good traits that overshadow any not so good ones. He's very good with grandchildren and other small kids. Never snappy or aggressive in any way towards them.

Lynn - she is just beautiful and you can sure see she and the boys are in love! Like Jayme's Max and Titan, Kirby isn't a lap dog - but he has to be where we are! Yes - even the bathroom! I don't know how he thinks we are going to scratch his belly when we are in there!
