How often should you get your dog cut, some vets say every 3 months but I fine that is too many times a year

Well, Cairns generally do not get "hair cuts" but get stripped and you will find many references to this if you "search" Forum.

I have Holly stripped about 2 or three times a year.

When it comes to grooming advice, I would not follow what the Vet has to say. There are two schools of Grooming. 1) weekly grooming where you roll the coat ( hand stripping), Or 2) you groom when the dog has taken on the Yak look... which means normally twice a year. And you can completely hand strip the dog down to its undercoat... or go for a combo grooming where you strip some hair and cut some. For pets most of opt for option #2.

A few do have the dogs clippered at the groomer, but a lot of us opt for option #2.... and there are many reasons, the first a.nd foremost is because it's better for the skin of the dog, and reduces the chances of any skin issues. Option #2 is done at home, unless you are lucky enough to find a groomer/breeder who you can pay to do it.

When I have pet grooming clients that I strip, they typically bring their dogs in 4 times a year

I'm a bit suspicious of the vet recommendation of every three months! Surely he wasn't talking about Cairns with that advice.

Well, I recommend my handstripping clients come in at least once every 3 months. It takes me approximately 2 hours that way and the dogs are in pretty good coats year round.

My groomer recommended every 3 months too, the time before last we left him 6 months and it was too much. This way, he keeps a lovely coat all year round and doesn't have to be stripped right down. I think it's a matter of preference with owners but I like the shaggy look and doing it more often but leaving more coat in between suits us.
