Sam I Am Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 I have an incredible soft spot for Scottish Terriers after loosing our sweet girl Sandie 2 yrs ago. She was a lovely dog, as sweet as the day was long. Jock always listened to her after being brought up by his older "sister". Since then we have tried one male silkie pup(I posted about him a while back) who was the pup from hell... he went back to the breeders after making Jocks life misreable for a horrid 5 days. Meanest pup I have ever met. Anyway, I always look at the Humane site... dont know why because the Silkie pup totally turned us off getting another pup. Jock is the world to us and the last thing we want is to upset him again. BUT.... I looked... and I am hopelessly attracted to this three year old Scottie (who is not purebred) . She is a pound dog turned over to the humane society, was not spayed (now is) and was probably a product of a puppy mill operation. When I talked to the humane society staff they told me she is ok with other dogs but is fearfull and scared... what to do? http://www.edmontonhumanesociety.com/index.php?option=com_adoptions&view=details&adoptionid=45180&Itemid=4 Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened. - Anatole France Adventures with Sam &Rosie
Zekey's Mom Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 Look at that face! And that coloring! You're in BIG trouble. Irresistable! Can you take Jock to the shelter to see if the two get along, before applying to adopt?
josie&holly Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 Oh, what a sweet face - you cannot resist that one! I agree that you should take Jock along and see how they get on and also how you feel about her before you actually apply. www.cairnterriertalk.co.uk
hheldorfer Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 I wouldn't be able to say no if I was in your shoes. I also vote that you and Jock take a ride to meet her.
ScruffynMag Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 No you shouldn.t have looked and now you won't be able to resist, i wouldn't. What a sweet face www.cairnterriertalk.co.uk
Lynn in TN Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 Good luck when you got to meet her in person! LOL
sanford Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 I say go for it as long as you'll be easy on yourself if it doesn't work out. There's always an element of risk, but putting Jock's welfare first is the right thing to do. Your heart is in the right place... wanting a Scottie, giving a wonderful home to an orphaned dog and having a companion for Jock. I don't want to minimize the fact that there is a risk, but it's an acceptable one. Good luck! FEAR THE CAIRN!
pkcrossley Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 when i looked it said photo unavailable --is that connected to you? if she is a cross, that could be hopeful for you --might cut the effects of the inbred illnesses of the breed.
Malcolm's Dad Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 If you can take Jock to meet her. If Jock says yes, well then decision made.
pindrop Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 Unfortunately I can't see the picture either. So...what's the scoop? Have you decided to head over with Jock in tow to see how everyone behaves themselves with one another? I'll be watching for an update. btw,..Good luck if you do decide to head over. Dempsy's Mom Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 I can't see him either. I too want to know if that is due to you? He sounds wonderful. Good luck. Elsie, Max, Meeko & Lori
Sam I Am Posted September 30, 2011 Author Posted September 30, 2011 Fate intervened! I had it in my head that if she was not adopted by this evening I would head down to the humane society.... but she has found a home. I am so glad for her and hope that her life turns the corner and has the good fortune of being as lucky as all the dogs on this site are. I must admit I am useless when it comes to being brave going to the Humane Society. About 5 months ago I thought it would be a good thing to head down to “view” the dogs that were up for adoption, also because the I wanted to see the new digs that had been built for these animals (its lovely... waterfall, big green spaces etc). However, upon walking into the building and seeing the older dogs wishfully looking out of their holding areas at any upright that walked in, I landed up having to put on my sun glasses, as I stood in the atrium crying my eyes out. It was such a gut reaction and I had to flee. I really am a big weeny. PK you are so right about getting a cross Scottie breed...such a shame that the purebreds have such a high rate of cancer and other diseases. They are amazing dogs Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened. - Anatole France Adventures with Sam &Rosie
Hawkeye Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 Happy to hear she has found a new home. I know Jock's day will come when he has either a new brother or sister. I had a very similar experience when we went to the animal shelter...I walked in and was overwhelmed by all the dogs pleading for our attention. I become an emotional wreak and had to leave too. Yup another weeny here.....
pindrop Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 Third weeny posting - I too get way too emotional and now do not go over. Before we got Layla, I wanted to go all the time to just see what they had but found it so difficult with all those sad eyes staring back at me. Course now we have Layla she is more than enough for both of us. Your day will come when and if you decide to adopt a friend for Jock and you will know it when it happens. _whits_ Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 I can't go to shelters. I get distraught. And am tempted to take home the dog that is least likely to find a home and usually not a good fit. That's why I have to pick out my dog online through the shelter websites and then visit that dog and only that dog. On a positive note, I found the most adorable little Cairn mix at a shelter earlier this summer, but someone adopted him before I could. Why it's positive? Thanks to not getting him, I was matched to my amazing and lovely rescue Addie a couple weeks later. The right dog will find you at the right time.
