Kong Recipes

Hello all! What does everyone think of the new forum? Learning curve for me but I will get the hang of it!

Does anyone know of any good Kong Recipes. No corn, wheat, or soy please. Recently, I've been trying to give her a Kong filled treat every day. She eats 1/2 of dry dog food twice a day....I think I need to adjust that a bit to allow for the treat. Don't need a weight problem. Wish I had someone watching my calories! :P

Peanut Butter!!! Put some peanut butter and kibble in it, they love it. Also you can freeze this mixture and it takes them longer to eat it.

Another one is plain yogurt and kibble. Also can be frozen.

Percy gets a Kong everyday when I go to work, but they are very boring. I just put some of her kibble that I've scooped out for her morning meal and stuff the end with the peanut butter flavored Kong treats. Every morning when I give it to her she takes it upstairs to my bedroom to eat it...that's always a sign of a good treat if it makes it upstairs, lol! If I'm trying to keep her still to brush her I'll do peanut butter. A friend of mine mashes up bananas and pops it in the freezer before giving it to her dogs.

1/2 a cup. Left out a whole word there!

:offtopic: Nice use of tags, KShep

I love the tags! They are pretty handy.

It kind of depends on what the Kong device is. For Sassy I have I 5 Kong treat balls about the size of tennis balls. 3 of them are round with fairly large holes like this http://www.petfooddi...it-Ball-Dog-Toy and 2 are more pentagon shape with much smaller holes like this http://www.petfooddi...&utm_medium=cse I tend to use the pentagon shape ones, because it makes it more difficult for her to just dig out the treat in two seconds.

What I do is buy baby carrots, the thicker the better and put one in the pentagon shape ones and maybe two in the rounded ones, really jam them in there. It takes anywhere from 2 minutes to half an hour to get them out and she is working them the whole time. Every once in a while she will lay flat out in front of it and just give up, I then have to dig them out for her with a spoon handle.

They work as a pretty good baby sitter if you need to get some things done without the guilt look :( from the furball for not spending "ALL" your time on her.

Found out recently that RIpley likes carrots. You could get really interesting with Kong stuffers! :)

I've used peanut butter (I try to use low-fat), bananas & yogurt...all with kibble mixed in. Haven't given him one in awhile...may have to pull one out for a treat! I like the carrot idea, too...Tanner's crazy about carrots. And apples...and well...just about anything. :)

Okay, tell me if this sounds good or healthy.

  • 1/2 cup of dry dog food in the morning
  • 1 medium kong filled (in order) dry dog food (less than 1/8 of a cup), 1 tablespoon Smart Pup- skin and coat smoothie (smells like banana baby food. I liked that it had the salmon oil in it. I've been reading about the benefits on here recently), 1/4 inch slice of natural balance dog food roll to hold it all in (around noon) I think a medium sized kong holds less than 1/4 a cup of kibble and treats/etc combined (correct me if I'm wrong)
  • 1/4 cup of dry dog food in the evening

Too much?

I need advice, I am simply experimenting with this now. I've been really particular about her diet from the beginning.

I'm not saying I will give her a kong everyday but she enjoys the challenge. It takes her about 45 minutes to finish it. On the days when I don't give her the Kong, I will do 1/2 cup in the evenings (maybe I should do 1/3 mornings and evenings?). Also, no other treats on the day she gets the kong. I had a kong when she was a puppy but it got lost, and before we got this one- she got an average of 4 very small nutro crunchy treats a day.

I'm worried about overindulging her and causing digestive upsets....also kind of worrying about her getting spoiled on the dog food roll. Growing up my dogs would refuse to eat a meal with out mighty dog. Ripley has been fine with the kibble. I don't want to have to introduce the dog food roll or wet dog food into her meal.

Sorry....I'm such a worrier!!
