Sadie is getting a little brother... but wait, she's gunna be in for a shock for her little brother is gunna be a KITTEN! 8 week old kitten in fact. a Rescue little boy. Tiger Stripe with White under belly, white nose 'n blaze and white legs 'n paws. He'll keep his claws..... Fixing him in a few months after he's old enough.... Thankfully i'm off sat 'n sun, getting him(ace the kitten) tomorrow(err, thursday)... I work thurs evening but will keep them seperated.. friday i work but my brother is gunna be babysitting(sitter will be at a funeral), so they wont be unsupervised and he has a cat, so he will look out for the kitten.... Trying the kitten route with Sadie cause then he(kitten) will grow up with her vs going off somebody elses word on an adult being doggy friendly, this way i will KNOW he will be doggy friendly. Sadie likes kitty cats and not for a snack, just she loves to play and most adult cats dont understand that. I hope her mama drive kicks in and she babies this little guy. Will post pictures of him after i get him, and post a picture of their first encounter..... But yes, for the first 2 weeks, I plan to keep them seperated whenever we are not home. I plan to put him in my bedroom and put a 2nd litterbox in the master bathroom, and just put his food 'n water in the master bath..... Now what to do during the night I dont know as Sadie loves to sleep with me and i bet Ace will as well... We will just have to see.... but i am a light sleeper and wake up easily so no worries about night-time...

Anybody have an adult Cairn and get a kitten?? If so how did you introduce them and how long before he/she accepted the new interloper(kitten)?? Also, any tips would be appreciative on how to introduce them... Cairns are not the typical doggy... I have introduced doggy's to kitty's 'n kittens before... just never a Cairn, and they are known for their high prey drive....

PS:: Reason why i say i hope her mama drive kicks in is cause he was abandoned by his mama and bottle fed, and so he never has had a mama.... Be nice for him to have a mama, even if mama was a doggy. lol. ((PS, if you havent noticed, i take in rescue pets, i rescue pets, and i adopt... nothing against breeders 'n ppl who buy from them, i just prefere to give a deserving animal a 2nd chance at a home life))

We haven't brought a kitten w/Pegi, but we do have 2 cats (Pepsi, age 16,and Ghost, age 9). Pegi (age 2) loves to play with them, and Pepsi enjoys tormenting Pegi. He will chase her, eat her food and drink her water, jump at her and basically drives her nuts. Ghost, on the other hand, wants nothing to do w/Pegi and will jump on one of the kids' beds and watch Pegi try (unsuccessfully) to jump up.

I have always had dogs and cats and never had a problem.

Good luck! Love the name Ace.

Can't help too much but wanted to wish you the best with kitty vs. cairn introductions. Hopefully it will be friendly and peaceful! One note...be carefully with the litter boxes. It seems the dogs really like snacking from them, you may have to gate off the box.

OH I know. I used to have a schipperke and 2 cats... had 1 of the cats first, then got the schipperke then the 2nd cat.. thankfully the schipperke learned the hard way to leave the kitty boxes alone.... swipe to the face when kitty was in it. happened once, and he associated the swipe with the smell(even cleaned) and left them alone. lol. He was a smart doggy. kitty box will be in the master bathroom, and she never enters that room unless i'm in there and i invite her in. I trained her to stay on the other side of the bathroom door. I love the name Ace too, However, The lady promised me the kitten, went to get him this morning, and he was gone! she said somebody came last night and got him, after she promised she'd hold him for me until this morning cuase i refused to uproot both my kids from their beds(crib 'n bed) to get the kitten and had to wait for the kid i babysit to show up this morning... The Nerve..... I haven't become deterred, we will get a kitten or a dog friendly adult.... just wont be that tiger stripped with white kitten.

Editted:::

The lady just called me to let me know the ppl just returned Ace back to her. Obiviously their older cat didnt like him... She apologized to me abt it.... So I am heading over soon to get him, Will bring the kid i'm babysitting with my 2 girls and get him. We Want Ace! lol.

I managed to get Ace. She called me this morning and said that he was brought back. So i am estatic. He is here. and Sadie is going crazy! He of course is the size of a rodent. lol. Gotta hear the whimpering 'n whining she does cause he's under the couch 'n she can sniff him but cant get to him.... She did lunge the first time and got swatted on her butt(not light but not abusive hard) with a firm "no" and she is being taught the "leave it" command and i'm applying it to Ace. He's 8 weeks old. Very Pretty.....

Picture 1: I had him in the bathroom while we took sadie for a brisk walk to try to reduce her energy some.....

Picture 2: Ace is going to hide under the couch, which is causing a uproar from Sadie. lol.

Hi! I have a 14 month old cairn, 3 cats and currently 3 foster kittens.

I'm not sure if your dog is like mine, cats are his favorite beings on earth...but when I introduced him to the kittens I let them sort it out themselves.

The kittens were more of an issue than the Cairn  They HATED him. So he backed away, whining and defeated.

The only thing I made sure of was to not hold the kitten so Hubble wouldn't jump for it. I had them meet on the floor.

I would advise you or anyone with a new kitten in general (who is a novice cat owner), to set the kitten up in a small room or bathroom (toilet closed!) for overnight/when you're not home, just to ensure the safety of a kitten that age and in your case, so you can supervise your dog to make sure he doesn't play too roughly and you can start reinforcing "Respect the Cat" boundaries. I do this with kittens 2-3 weeks depending on their level of interest in wires and other things that could cause them trouble. But if you've had kittens you probably know the whole "kitten room" routine

It looks like it's going well for you guys!

The kitten is adorable and Ace is a GREAT name!! Hope it goes well.

Oh I know. I have a make-shift(cut up small box) for a litterbox, and his food/water dish in the main bathroom and a blanket for a comfy spot. Sadie is going bonkers, trying to get to the kitten. I held the kitten on my lap and let sadie put her front paws on my knee's.... She was okay after she got discplined for lunging at the kitten. Her prey drive has kicked in at the moment i think cause she's going around the couch trying to get to the kitten, got trouble for we left for a little bit, put the kitten in the bathroom with his stuff... and she started going at teh bottom of the couch to get to him.. and boy did i have a hissy fit for the couch is not even paid off.... got a furniture store credit... it got less then 6months. After the bathroom door was opened, she went in to investiage which was fine, until she tried eating his food, she got discplined for that.... She's whimpering 'n whinning like she does when i dont let her chase a rabbit she flushes out. Right now he's in the hiding stage for its day one here. and she wont let him be whenever he does try to explore.... he loves to curl up and purr though.... I bet once he gets his spunky adventurous streak back, he'll let her know to leave him alone. i will NOT declaw him, nothing against declawed cats for i've had 'em before... I just want him to have a even footing with her and something besides a clubbed paw to make his point.... Sadie has been taken out and excerised to keep her energy down. Will let her see me put him into the bathroom to see if it'll stop her from clawing 'n trying to destroy the underside of the couch.

O. I also plan to give them 2 weeks to adjust to each other... minimum by the way on the 2 weeks....

If i come home to find the couch destroyed a bit more on the underside, then i will buy a kennel and put her butt in it when we are gone.

I am a little late for this conversation - but Ace is a cutie and I am glad that Sadie and Ace are making progress.

What a roller coaster ride. So glad to hear you have your new baby Ace. I think you have your work cut out for you in trying to get Sadie and Ace comfortable with each other.

Ace is so cute. I'll keep my fingers crossed that everything works out for Ace & Sadie. Thanks to you, both their lived will be enriched as companions for each other. Good luck!

Yes. It is a roller-coaster Ride. Ace is making progress, Isn't afraid of Sadie anymore. They must have come to an agreement.... Ace sleeps on my pillows and Sadie down by my chest/tummy. lol. Its a good thing I happen to like Roller Coaster Rides..... At least Sadie isn't trying to "get" to Ace with a prey drive intent.... Watching it and Praying they work out the kinks, right now Ace is the size of Sadie's head, so he's intimated(sp?) with her.

My daughter has 4 cats and 2 large dogs and the only way she was able to stop the dogs from litter snacking was to gate off the room where the litter boxes are. Plus it gives the cats a room to escape to if/when the dogs are rambunctious.
