Stella's Mom Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Hello, I am new to posting on the forum but have been browsing for a few months now. My husband and I just got our first puppy and, of course, we choose a Cairn! Her name is Stella and she is very playful and rambunctious but also very sweet. We have had her for about a month now and my husband has pulled out her baby fur along her back (he calls it her "racing stripe"). Will her puppy top coat come out on it's own or will we need to hand strip it all? Also, any opinions to what to use for flea control? I originally bought Advantix but my vet doesn't like that it is harmful to cats. It has seemed to work really well so far...other suggestion? The pictures are from just a few days ago. She is right at 14 weeks old.
tomatosandwich Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Stella! You beautiful girl, you! Welcome! I'm no help with the stripping. I've been trying to gradually strip my guy for the past month now, with very little progress. I'm so chicken!
bradl Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Welcome to you and Stella - she's a cutie! You'll want to pull the puppy fluff. The ear fringe looks ready now CAIRNTALK: Questions? Meggie Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 How cute is she?! I haven't touched my boy's coat at all, other than bathing him (although his doggie bff stripped him for us in one of their endless wrestling matches) Welcome and congratulations on your new family member!
ScruffynMag Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Stella is so cute!! I WANT ONE I don't do the stripping myself and didn't take Scruffy for a strip until he was 8 months old but I did pluck the hair from around the top of his ears. www.cairnterriertalk.co.uk
Hawkeye Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Oh my, what a little doll!! Welcome to the forum Stella & Mom!
sanford Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 She's so beautiful! Of course when you teach her to come, you have to yell: "STELLAAAAH!..." (Channelling M. Brando). FEAR THE CAIRN!
Idaho Cairns Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 I like the name too! Great pictures of your little one. I do not strip mine but the opinion of those who do seems to be that the earlier you start your dog on the process the better. Welcome to the world of the Cairn obsessed!

Sam I Am Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Hello you beautiful baby Cairn Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened. - Anatole France Adventures with Sam &Rosie
kjwarnold Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 What a beautiful baby girl! Just love those humongous ears sticking up...don't worry, she'll grow into them. Yep, you'll need to strip off that puppy fuzz. Just give it a few gentle tugs. If it doesn't come out easily yet, it's not ready. She might look like she's molting for a while, but before long she'll have that svelte look of a Cairn puppy just stripped down to their underwear. Oh, and great name! Lynn in TN Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 What a beauty Stella is, and welcome to the forum. I just love to see Cairn puppy pictures. I brought Kelly home in June and I stripped her at around 11 or 12 weeks. It is not hard and she sat for me pretty good considering she was so young. It took me 2 days short periods of time off and on through out the day. I used I used rubber gloves like a doctor uses( I can't find finger cots small enough for my small fingers). The gloves or cots makes the job easier. You can grip the fur better. I'm not an expert but you can look for my back post Kelly's vet visit it is on page 6 in cairn life and it says slideshow at the bottom of my post click on it and you will see pictures of her before and after. The first half of the pictures she hasn't been stripped the second half of the slideshow she has, you can tell a difference. Good Luck with your new puppy and stripping her. You will find a lot of helpful information on this site. I am very grateful for it. The people on here are so great!
TazTalk Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Bella Stella!!!! She is so precious. Welcome to the forum. We have never stripped our Cairns so we tend to have the softer coats. Stella looks so much like Taz at that age (see pic). For a few weeks, I thought he was deformed and would forever have over-sized ears. But, they do grow into them and everything becomes proportionate I do miss that look - such a fun age!
Susie Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Hello cairn owners!! I am loving reading your posts and looking at the puppy photos. I haven't found any west coast breeders yet and I'm so anxious to find a puppy. I'm wanting a wheaten for sure. I would like a grey one with black muzzle. Any suggestions how to find one? I haven't gotten any replies to my posts. I sure hope to join you all with my own stories!
