Jock and his hairy coat

Some advise needed . I gave up on stripping by hand as neither Jock nor I have the patience for it. I use the Mars comb, thinning shears for tricky areas and straight scissors for trimming ears. I find the Mars comb works to a certain point but still leaves a lot of hair on the boy. Has anyone used the Furminator? What does it take out.. undercoat or the coarse hair? How does the coat look afterwards? I don’t want Jock to look shaved just minus a bit more hair than the Mars comb can take out.

Percy has a lot of undercoat so I borrowed a friend's furminator to try out before I bought my own. It gets some of both coats but more of the undercoat. I also use the mars and a regular comb to brush her out. I think the furminator helps thin out the undercoat and makes her look slimmer.

I have never used the Mars because I hand strip, but I do use the furminator. It combs out undercoat.
