gt_mustang_gal Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 Poor little Cracker is getting neutered today. They are also checking his puppy teeth, doing labwork, trimming nails, checking his tail (he keeps biting at it and keeps it bent most of the time), and microchipping him. It's been my first day without him and I miss him so much! I have no idea what to expect when I get home with him. He's so energetic and always jumping around. I know he won't be able to do that with the stitches, but how in the world do I stop him?
Newman Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 He be a little sore, fonzy was sore for couple weeks, all will go well though! longer life! Click to show the full size image!
janis Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 Take a deep breath! He should do fine. Maybe they should give US the anesthesia....how we worry about the fur babies.
Lynn in TN Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 I wish I could help with this but I don't know anything about neutered dogs. I am sure he will be okay.
dinib Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 Yes, try telling a Cairn "no running, no jumping" . Just try to contain him as much as you can (which is hard to do when they hit their night time sillies and zoom around the room). Our vet kept Buckley overnight and sent him home with pain meds. It took Buckley about a week before he starting acting normal. He did run with a little hitch in his step after the surgery.
Malcolm's Dad Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 Cracker should be fine. When I got Malcolm he was already neutered. My last dog was neutered when he was a puppy. He came home in the afternoon and was a bit groggy. After a few hours he was back to his normal playful self. You wouldn't know anything had been done at all. Then he started licking and pulling on the stitches. I took him back to the vet after a few days he just wouldn't leave those stitches alone. The vet said he was fine and some dogs pull the stitches out themselves. And that is exactly what he did. When I brought him in to have the stitches taken out the vet said Max had already done that. He should be ok, but that won't stop us from worrying anyway.
DemiSheep Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 I told my wife the other day that when we have Attila neutered that it'd be his first night away from home/us since we got him and she looked at me and said, "what?! He has to stay there?? I didn't know that!! That's not nice I don't like that at all!" So I'll be the one that takes him and drops him off...my wife will probably shed a few tears. Hehehehe I will miss him too, good thing it's only one night. Our Cairns: Attila (Sprouted 03/09/11), Tessa (Sprouted 01/14/12)
finncaraid Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 How did Cracker make out? How are you coping? Did he come home with a cone/collar? If he did, has he discovered yet all the fun things he can do with it??
ScruffynMag Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 Scruffy coped just fine after his op but he wouldn't stop licking the stiches and ended up with an infection because of this. He had antibiotics for a couple of days and was fine. We took the cone off and he alternated with a onesie and a soft blow up collar. He was back to normal in a week. www.cairnterriertalk.co.uk
Lynn in TN Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 It is killing me waiting to find out how Cracker is! So come on how is he????
cairnsby3 Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 Some vets don't keep them overnight, mine doesn't cause no one is there overnight LindaMACH3 Red Lion Springin Miss Macho CDX RAE OF MEMarquee Cairnoch Glintofmacho CD RE MX MXJ OF ME Glenmore Hjour Summer Sun
Dempsy's Mom Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 Cracker will be a little fizzled out for a little bit. Hope he is doing fine - soon he'll be back to normal and life will be fun again. Just love his name. (little crackpot) Elsie, Max, Meeko & Lori
pindrop Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 When we had Layla done, the vet's office wanted to keep her overnight as they do the little guys in the mornings (as they go home the same day) and the girls are done after. When I found out that there is no one on the premises during the night, I thought having her there was ridiculous for if anything happened to her there would be no one to take care of her. The vet's office tried to insist on her overnight visit but I put my foot down. It just didn't make sense. So...before making that appointment - don't assume anything, ask questions. There is really no need for an overnight stay especially if there is no one there (assuming all went well with the operation.) Husband and dog missing ...25 cents reward for dog
Hawkeye Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 Hope Cracker is doing well. I also will add that there really is not reason they should have to stay overnight. Mine went in early and came home same day at end of day. Like Pindrop stated if they do not have anyone staffed through the night, I think they are safer at home. We can keep an eye on things. Hate to say it but it just racks up the vet bill.
gt_mustang_gal Posted August 15, 2011 Author Posted August 15, 2011 Sorry for the delay in updating you guys! Cracker's surgery went fine. They started at 7am and kept him all day. I picked him up at 6pm, so he did not stay overnight (although this hospital has people there 24/7, I still wouldn't have wanted to leave him). He hasn't ran with a "hitch in his step" or been "fizzled" as some of you said. LOL He acts like nothing ever happened. He doesn't seem the least bit sore. He is on pain meds for 4 days, but they aren't even calming him down. It is IMPOSSIBLE for a Cairn to understand "no" when the zoomies hit. I just hope he doesn't bust his stitches or something. The vet only sent him home with a onesie, but by the next morning, I had to call the vet and get a cone of shame. He figured out how to escape from the onesie in a matter of minutes. Then he started to lick and get interested in what had happened down there. LOL The cone of shame was hilarious and sad at the same time. He kept bumping into everything and trying to figure out how to get it off. I eventually took it off cause he couldn't figure out how to eat and drink. So far, he hasn't bothered his wound today. I just can't believe after surgery he is STILL so hyper (and biting everything/everyone in site).
cairnsby3 Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 It's harder on the girls, Spring was still out of it when she came home, but Shiner was wide awake and ready to go! LindaMACH3 Red Lion Springin Miss Macho CDX RAE OF MEMarquee Cairnoch Glintofmacho CD RE MX MXJ OF ME Glenmore Hjour Summer Sun
Meggie Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 Glad your pup is doing well. Except the biting part Hub got neutered a couple of months after I had him at about 8 months old. When I picked him up he whined a bunch, when we went home he slept the entire evening and the next day he was fine. He gave up on trying to get the cone of in an hour or two. The only thing that was off was him navigating going up stairs with the cone
dinib Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 Both Gracie and Buckley were kept overnight after their surgeries at the 24/7 animal hospital. When we moved, I got a copy of their records. Gracie's overnight chart had notes from the vet to the tech to periodically wipe Gracie's 'eye boogies'.
Lynn in TN Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 I am so glad he is doing well. I bet he has grown and we haven't seen a picture in a while. HINT HINT
gt_mustang_gal Posted August 16, 2011 Author Posted August 16, 2011 Yeah, he is definitely growing. He weighs 7.4 pounds now! I took some pics of him after the surgery (yes, some with the cone of shame ), so I will get those posted!
