Hi, I'm Meg! I have cairn who is a little over a year old named Hubble (due to his constant excitement-spinning as a youngster). I call him Hubby.

My first dog!

He's a pet shop rescue because they deemed him "too old" to sell at 6 months of age =(

I see all these pictures of your cairns and although Hubble's behavior is pretty 'by the book' of Cairns (those monkey noises!!)...he doesn't look 100%. Something about that long snout!

Regardless, he's a doll. He LOVES cats and kittens (even though they don't always love him) and even whines when pigeons fly away. He's every animal's best friend, even my cousin's crotchety cockatoo's!

We live in NYC and he goes to work with my boyfriend, who works for a very dog-friendly video game design company. I am a photographer and do animal rescue work when I can!

Meet my boy:

Welcome to the forum. I don't see what you apparently see in your Hubby, he looks Mark I Mod 0 Cairn to me! Nice looking Wheaten Cairn with pleasant markings, nice coat, and everything in order. How nice that Hubby can go to work with your significant other--that must be a great way to socialize one of these wild child Cairns!

Thank you for the welcome!

I run into a lot of people with cairns and my boy is always a touch larger and his face is proportioned differently! I'll take your word for it though! I'm unfamiliar with the ins and outs of pure breeds =)

He is the office's trouble maker! His best friend is a big mushy pit bull named Princess and the wrestle for hours until they collapse into their shared giant bean bag bed. The word "distraction" has been thrown around a few times ;)

Leave it to a Cairn to give a 60lb dog a good play fight!

Not to worry, look at my avatar--those are two full grown Cairns--the one on the left is a 27lb "tom boy" of a Cairn, long legged, rangy, raw boned (or euphemistically, "big boned") but she is all Cairn all the time. The little one is about right size wise. I suspect that most Cairns these days are on the large size.

Welcome ..... Your Hubble looks just like my Jeff!!!! Our second Cairn, Oscar is shorter and more compact than Jeff or Hubble, or would be IF he wasn't over his weight limit, at 19 pounds he's a wide boy ;)

I wanted to add that it is very kind of you to rescue Hubble.. I got Jeff from a pet store when he was 4 months old, but I try to avoid going to the ones with dogs for sale. I feel so sorry when they are stuck in those small cubby's... makes me feel weak and easy to set another one free! lol

I became a dog person AFTER I got my dog.

27lbs?! That makes Hub look like a munchkin at 14 or 15lbs!

I must only be meeting the dainty Cairns!

I would love to see photos of your fellas! I'd love to see Hubble's doppleganger!

Oscar is such a great name for a cairn too btw!

*Regarding your edit, I appreciate it. I happened to walk by and they had him priced so low compared to the other pups, it was frightening. I consulted a rescue I volunteered with years ago and they said the chain of pet shops has a terrible reputation and to get him out!

He spent 4 months in a plexiglass box. For months when we passed a glass door, he'd panic. It affected him in many ways. All parties involved are lucky to have each other!

Welcome! Your Hubble is a beautiful boy. It was great of you to rescue him. I really love the pictures.

How wonderful that you could give him a better life by rescuing him from a plastic box! Poor lad. I think he is a very good looking Cairn and how lovely that he can go to work and enjoy company.

Welcome, Hubble and Meggie! Hubble sure looks all Cairn to me, too. He looks a lot like my dog, Buffy, with the wheaten coat and dark points on the ears. You're lucky that he can go to work with your boyfriend and spend time wrestling with his friend - a dream come true for a Cairn! It's great that you've given him a loving home. Keep the pics coming!

Welcome! Hubble is a cutie! Itms fantastic that he gets to go to work & play...I hate the sad look on Tanner's face when I have to leave him.

Welcome Meggie & Hubble (hubby) - he sure looks like a cairn to me. So glad you found our site and will continue to show us pictures of your baby. Thanks for rescuing him from his plexi-box too. Hopefully as time passes, he will forge new memories and forget where he originally came from.

I like the name Hubble or Hubby. He looks very happy and content. I am glad that you have him in your life. Hubby is spoiled if he gets to go to work every day - how fun. Welcome!! :)

PS: I really love the first pic. Love his eyes shut with the bone tucked under his chin, little hairs from his chin falling over the bone - oh, he is so relaxed. Ahhhhh. Nothing better than a bone chin pillow and the knowing that NOBODY is getting this bone. :P

Welcome to the forum, Hubble (a.k.a. Hubby) and Meggie! So glad you rescue this little cutie! He will thank you in so many ways you cannot believe. I love the last picture with his eyes slightly closed -- cairn attitude!

Welcome aboard, Meggie,

Hubby/Hubble looks like he's "all Cairn" to me, and adorable as well. Great name! Thank you, thank you for rescuing him!

At 15 lbs. He's well within the usual weight range. As to your comment re Hubby's size... I see a surprising number of cairns here in NYC that I think are on the small size : 10-12 or 13 lbs.

As you will see from photos on this site, the proportions of our cairns varies and all of them might not conform to the strict "show" guidelines. One of the things I love about the breed is that cairn terriers are so natural looking. To me, this allows for latitude in their physical appearance. The Cairn "look", expression & personality always shines through... and that's what counts!thumbsup.gif

So I'm not the only one seeing these tiny cairns!

Since your in NY...have you been to the Cairn Meetup group in Jersey City ever? I saw it online but have yet to be able to go! The pics of their playdates look amazing!!

Thank you everyone for the kind words and warm welcome!

I'm glad his name is appreciated =) Whenever we get asked in real life people look confused..."Bubbles? Pebble?". Especially young kids, when I clarify "Like the telescope!" I get blank stares :)

When we originally picked him up and I was doing the paperwork, he was so pent up he was nipping and jumping and slit a friend's eyelid open!

When I asked if I could walk him out they said "Good luck, he's never been outdoors or on a leash."

The minute we left the building...it was a totally different dog! It was ASTOUNDING!!

Funny how the of love of a caring owner opens the hearts of animals. So glad you have him. He is lovely

I couldn't have asked for a better first dog. So much personality!

Not that we haven't had our challenges (the typical cairn puppy nipping game was a difficult phase) but he's really turning into quite the darling.

I'm hoping he can become a therapy dog!

Welcome to the forum.

He sounds to be in capable, loving hands. Our first was the same coloration, wheaten. Lovely.

I share the same jealousy with others that your Hubby gets to go into the workplace. Love to take Titan along with me, but alas, not in a physician's office.
