Lynn in TN Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 It is so hard to believe she is 16 weeks old. She had the last of her shots, and weighs 5 lbs 8 oz. Hard to believe that one so small could be so strong. She has to be cutting teeth, she has started chewing in a major way. She will chew anything she can get her mouth on. She really likes rocks and concrete. Yikes, I'm afraid she is going to break her teeth. She is chewing so hard that she is chewing small pieces off the rocks and concrete in just a couple of seconds Which is the amount of time it takes to get it from her. Jaws would be envious! I know it will pass but I have never seen a dog like to chew on rocks. She loves getting sprayed with the water hose. She tries to get us to turn it on all the time. She likes to play in the bath tub too! LOL We have so much fun with her. She did the weirdest thing the other day. She would not take her eyes off me and followed me every where I went and she would scream/whine If I went to the bathroom. She even watched me while she was eating. I could walk in circles and she would follow me. Don't get me wrong I loved the attention but it made me feel eerie. She didn't nap that day either, but yet she didn't act sick. She was back to normal the next day though. I was so glad. I didn't think she could get any cuter. I was wrong she gets cuter every day. She is so smart. If she sees her food bowl coming she lays down in front of where I will set it. She knows already that I want set it down if she is standing. So funny when it involves food how they will do what you want. I thought I would post a couple of pictures.
Malcolm's Dad Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 Aww what a cute puppy. Seems like you have a power chewer there. I've been getting bones called knee caps. They are just the right size and last for hours.
Idaho Cairns Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 Lynn, she is beautiful! I understand about the rock and concrete chewing--I have dog that is addicted to finding and chewing rocks. As a consequence, Sammi has worn down both her upper and lower canines to dull teeth 2/3rd of where they should be. I would advise you to discourage, in any way you can, chewing on hard substances--Kelly may outgrow the habit but if she doesn't......!
sanford Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 Kelly is a beauty! The joy shines through in the pictures and in your description of her antics. More, please! FEAR THE CAIRN!
hheldorfer Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 Kelly is beautiful and it sounds like she's getting smarter by the day. Good job, mom! Buffy liked to chew on rocks when she was younger, then suddenly stopped. I hope Kelly gets over her fascination with this before she hurts her teeth. When you catch her doing it, try telling her "no" and then giving her an acceptable substitute. Great pics!
Dempsy's Mom Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 That was fun to read an update - to bad you don't love her a little more. She such a happy pup (seems silly to say, why wouldn't she be) - love the pics, she's so healthy looking. Elsie, Max, Meeko & Lori
DemiSheep Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 Kelly is gorgous! Attila likes to chew on rocks too! I thought it was he most bizzar thing. He ties to chew on the bricks of our fire place and he tries to chew on the stone wall in our back yard. He has tried chewing on small stones and rocks as well. I always stop him like you as fast as possible and over time I think he is getting the picture. Our Cairns: Attila (Sprouted 03/09/11), Tessa (Sprouted 01/14/12)
beccadiane374 Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 Cute pictures of a cute puppy! Thanks for the update! Becky & Tanner
josie&holly Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 She is a very pretty girl! www.cairnterriertalk.co.uk
Hawkeye Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 Kelly is a little cutie pie, even when chewing rocks. Thanks for your update sounds like she is a happy go lucky cairn in love with her mommy.
pindrop Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 awwww Lynn - she is just such a cutie. Thanks for the update and keep them coming. I guess she misses you now that you are back to work. Layla also gathers rocks and still does to this day. She doesn't chew on them, just brings them in and then rolls around on them and makes crazy noises when doing this. We try to discourage her - and now have a rock collection on one of our tables. She doesn't mind if you take them away, just don't throw them back outside. So we save them up and when they get to be too much, we wait till she is sleeping and then throw them out (of course only to find the same ones and bring them back in.) Husband and dog missing ...25 cents reward for dog
Lynn in TN Posted August 5, 2011 Author Posted August 5, 2011 Thank you so much for the kind words everyone. I can't help but think she is beautiful. Idaho- I guess Kelly has more in common with Sammi than just looks. She is really obsessive about the rocks. She has gotten so bad that she started getting rocks small enough to fit in her mouth and hides them when we come inside. I now check her mouth before we come in to see if there is anything in it. HA!HA! I can't help laughing about it, she is so persistent when its something she likes.
ScruffynMag Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 What a pretty girl she is! www.cairnterriertalk.co.uk
Jayme Posted August 6, 2011 Posted August 6, 2011 She's cute! Max chewed but not concreate or rocks. He sure likes his rawhide chews though. We take those away when they get too small.
janis Posted August 6, 2011 Posted August 6, 2011 Hey Lynn She sure is a pretty dog. Love her laying in the grass with that contented look on her face. Kirby follows me everywhere too, even to the bathroom! They are so nuts!
KerryJayne Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 Aw Lynn she is gorgeous I can't believe how old she is already :-) her coat is gorgeous you've done a much better job than I have From Kerry, Molly the Westie, Peppa the black Lab, and Nessie the Cairn xx
zach84 Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 Just browsing the site and saw this post... So at 16 weeks old she only weighed 5 lbs 8oz? Mine weighed 6 lbs when I got him at 10 1/2 weeks old! At 16 weeks he was 11 lbs!!! He is about 12 lbs now and 18 weeks old, and he's not fat at all, it's solid muscle he actually pulls my wife around on walks! His ears still aren't up yet though...
Kathryn Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 She is a darling - lovely color. When she chews those rocks, does she swallow any? I would imagine that could become a problem, right? I am glad that -- of all the quirks my dogs have -- this is not one of them....
Zekey's Mom Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 So at 16 weeks old she only weighed 5 lbs 8oz But Kelly's a girl pup -- aren't they always daintier than their male counterparts? Kelly looks like a sweet Cairn with a merry disposition. Glad everything is going well. (Except for the rock-eating thing.)
KShep Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 her coat looks great btw! I can tell that you've been working hard on it

Female dogs normally are a little smaller than male dogs. She is 20 weeks now but I have no idea how much she weighs I am going to take her and have them weigh her soon.I hope she stays true to the size of a cairn because as strong as she is at her small size she can knock me off my feet, as I am small 5'3 and 113 pounds. If she was to get as big as Idaho's Cairn Sammi I won't stand a chance. Ha!HA! I am having trouble with my shoulder because she almost pulled it out of the socket trying to play with a kitten.LOL She does't eat the rocks. Just chews them. She isn't as bad as she was since she lost most of her baby teeth last weekend and they have since grown back. I wish babies teeth would come back that quickly! I can't take credit for her coat. I stripped her puppy layer when she was 11 weeks and other than that I brush her twice a week and that's all I have done. I can't help but think she is beautiful. Thank you everyone.
