Dempsy's Mom Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 If it wasn't for company I would never give my house a thorough cleaning, but the best part is when I find all of Dempsy's little hidden treasurers. I come out with them and show him and he looks at me with discuss, "Mom! You put that back! That's my business!" and he takes it from me and slowly waddles off to find a new safe spot. ... until company comes again. Elsie, Max, Meeko & Lori
Lynn in TN Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 At least I know that it is not just Kelly. I have never seen a dog that hides food like she does. I have to sweep my whole house often because of my children's allergies. Sometimes I let it go a couple of days. This time I found at least 20 treats some was her food. I showed them to her and said "What is this?" She then grabbed a mouthful and took off to pout. So funny. Is she saving it in case I forget to feed her or what? I thought maybe she didn't trust me or something.
percy's_girl Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Percy does this with her toys. There are four or five that are her favorites and she always takes them up to my bedroom. She never really plays with them, that's just where she thinks they belong. When I vacuum upstairs I always gather up all of the toys and throw them downstairs. After I'm done she'll carry them back up one at a time.
Idaho Cairns Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Cairns like to mold their environments and it is really fun to watch. Our girls always have a few "bed toys" that they bring into the bedroom every night, not to play with since that is disallowed but to have on the bed with them. It is like having children with teddy bears. Our living room seems to always have a few balls laying around and we usually pick them up a couple of times a week and put them in the toy box. No big deal.

cairnfan Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 I'm happy to hear that other dogs do this too. Bear walks around whimpering with specific toys or half chewed rawhides in his mouth. He looks around for the perfect place to "bury" his treasure and then pushes it in with his nose. Then he repeatedly pushes his nose over the spot like he is covering it up with dirt. He is very thorough! Sometimes my kids will walk over and help him by pretending to scoop more pretend dirt over the spot! LOL
kjwarnold Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Yep, this is company season at the lake so it's constant housecleaning. I'm always finding Kirby's bones in the couch or under a pillow in a guest room. Packy used to be a big stasher of bones and toys, too, but he seems to be over that. Jayme Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 I will at times find rawhides and toys in the oddest spots. He likes to hide them in the toe kick of the kitchen cabinets or the darkest corner in a small hallway.
pindrop Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 oh my goodness - Layla is the same way. We'll give her a rawhide/treat and off she will run to wherever and stash them. I'll usually find them when housecleaning too. Sometimes in plain view but to her they are hidden. Oldfox always tells her - "are you hiding them from the other pesky puppers?" Husband and dog missing ...25 cents reward for dog
hheldorfer Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Buffy's favorite spots for hiding rawhides is my recliner. Many is the time I plopped down to watch TV and had a rawhide poke me in the .
janis Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 With Kirby it's his bones and rawhides. I find them under the pillows on the bed, in the closet and in the chair and couch cushions. He gets REALLY PO'd when you move them.
finncaraid Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 HA-HA!! The hiding/burying thing is a bit odd for an indoor pet, don't you think? Would love to talk to a dog behaviorist someday about it! Our last dog use to hide her dry food all over the house. I use to tell her if a stranger came in they'd think we were starving her. Finn use to hide his toys when he was finished playing until I got him a rigid platic bag to put them in. His "regular" toys are kept in there & it's fun to watch him root around in there looking for a certain toy. When he's done playing, he's now putting them back in the bag. He started doing this on his own: I didn't teach him that. The bag is always in the same place so I guess he thinks they're safe now. Sometimes when he's done chewing on a bully, he'll decide to bury it in a chair cushion. He's not generally one to get on the furniture so I'm not sure why a chair is an okay place. Sometimes I can't resist- I'll go & remove it while he's looking & put it on the floor. He then gets in a huff & hides it behind a piece of furniture. He always seems to remember where he left it so I guess that's a good thing.
Laura Schoenheider Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 my pup miley will nudge her food bit and half finished rawhide sticks in between the couch cushions, then dig for them unsuccessfully, though i'm glad she still needs me for something
Hawkeye Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 I must live with two slobs! Neither Bailey nor Radar will put a toy back or hide it. I wish they would, they leave everything scattered about. Radar likes to pull all the toys out of the cabinet and then play with one. And the bully sticks, those are devoured in one sitting.
