Comfortable like an old sweater

Sam I Am

On the weekend as I was puttering around the garden I looked down at Jock, who was following my every step while I was admiring my roses, smelling their wonderful scent. I stopped and looked at this little friend, a best friend, grey whiskers and eyes surrounded by more grey hairs, smiling up at me. I then realised that I am his whole world. That nothing I could say or do would shift that trust he has in me. Sitting down in the grass I held him close and thought of the years that had gone by, and that it just seemed like yesterday, when I went to see this wee Cairn, jumping up and down in his pen, waiting happily to have the touch of a human hand. And through the years how we have melded together... like all best friends do. Puppies are wonderful, full of life and new beginnings, but having an old dog is like your favourite sweater to have around you when you are cold, or lonely and the world seems like a scary place to be. I might be your world Jock, but you sure are mine.

Ok with the tears streaming down my face I can barely see the screen as I type. That was beautifully worded, and right on track. Just like poetry. The greatest little pal in the world.

Another one with tears, here.

As I watch the contrast between my old lab and my Cairn pup, all of this post rings so true! Thank you for putting into words what so many hearts feel.

yes. i hope all the newer cairn people here can feel comfortable knowing that when all the giddiness of puppy stuff is behind, and even when your friend starts to show some signs of age, you still have many wonderful new adventures in love ahead. these dogs have incredible dimensions of presence.

What a wonderful tribute to your little friend and a testament to the amazing bond that you both share. May you have many, many more years to enjoy each other.
