Time for more quirks

Zekey's Mom

Those weird little behaviors that make you wonder - what makes them DO that?

Every time I sneeze, Zekey comes over and kisses my nose. Don't know where he learned that -- possible his old owners taught him? It's kind of cute, and very useful. If he's in a barking mode, I'll fake sneeze, just to distract him make him come over!

Gavin responds to clicks from the nail clipper. He comes right over and acts all interested -- I'll show him my nails and the clipper, but he doesn't want them. He just likes to hear the clicking.

Funny little guys! :P

Max LOVE popcorn. LOVES it. If he hears it popping, he will sit in front of the microwave and wait for it to get done then follow you until you share with him. He loves stuffed animals and has been carrying around an old bear of the kids' for the last few days. He HATES flies, he runs from them. Max also hates water and runs from it if it's not in his water bowl. Oh, he LOVES blankets like my son does and tries to steal mys on's blankets.

Would love it if Nena kissed me like Zekey does, but when either of us sneezes she runs right up close to us and barks repeatedly. Love the little quirks that they have.

That is so sweet. I love their quirks too.

Oh, how cute! It's like he wants to make your nose "better."

I've recently discovered two phrases that always get an excited response from Percy which is her latest quirk I'm trying to figure out. One is "Are you going to be nice?" I ususally say this when I have company coming over or we see another dog or person on our walks, so I get the association there. The other one is "Do you want to know a secret?" I have no idea what she thinks this means, but she can be upstairs and I'll be downstairs and ask either question and she'll come charging down! She won't come when I call her name, but she's not going to miss out on finding out a secret, lol!

Jock thinks he is..gasp...... a cat! He has always been fed home cooked food, so I have no idea why when he hears a can being opened, no matter where he is in the house, zip.. he's there.

Also after he finishes his dinner, he goes and stands (just for a second or two) under a plant stand that is in the kitchen. Why... only Jock knows.

Holly does not like enclosed spaces so I was surprised when I was staying with my sister that she decided a good place to sleep was under the dining table! However, back home she will not go under the table I have - even when I put a treat under it.................. she went towards it and then backed off. They do have funny ways these dogs!

Oh, and she runs away from spiders too!

Let me contribute to the "QuirkFest". One of the things Titan has started doing: He's sitting on the porch at the front door, as if he wants to come back in. Open the door to let him in and he streaks off the porch at mach 3, barking as if he's spotted some creature encroaching on his property. He does it at least once before he "really" wants to come in. Such creatures of habit they are. He's so funny.

The "do you want to know a secret thing cracks me up". I will sometimes look out the window and see Ripley lying in the grass in the yard, but if I happen to call her, she will immediately act like she is very busy chasing something.

She doesn't like change, and if she spots something new in the house, a large pot on the stove, a present on the floor- she will bark at it in part terror/part anger. Once my husband rolled in his computer chair to peek at her in the hallway- she was not amused.

Hates water! Hates it! For all I hear about how much Cairns love to swim and attack the sprinkler, I've never had a dog with such an aversion to water and/or baths.

Tries to "play attack" other dogs, but once she saw a bulldog and had reacted as though she was thinking "what the heck IS that?!" Immediately rolled over in submission at the very sight of it.

Comes running at the sound of the ice machine for a cube, barks at the kettle, goes ballistic at the shredder, etc. Has to stop and play with EVERY little boy she meets. She loves little, rowdy boys the most.

Love all these quirks. She is so funny. Great post also!!

Yep, we've got quirks. Kirby hates aluminum foil. He screeches and barks at it madly when I get some out. He knows the difference between the foil box and the parchment paper box, and once he sees which one it is, he leaves if it's not foil.

Packy will be reluctant to come when we're going outside, but once he gets to the hall, he starts barking at us like it was his idea in the first place and why aren't we hurrying up? He does it almost every time. He also LOVES dachshunds. Any dachshund, it doesn't matter, he gets all excited when he sees one. He can give up that dream though; I'm not getting a dachshund to be his girlfriend!

A couple of quirks live in my house too. Radar has this thing about our tv cabinet. We have the dog toys stored in the cabinet and he insists on the door alway open. Whenever I close the door he starts with the monkey noises and sniffing the door. Rather comical. Then Bailey needs his daily back scratch from daddy and while he's getting it he is constantly air licking.

After eating his breakfast, Zeus will back away from his bowl. Sometimes it is just a couple of feet before he turns around, but frequently he backs all the way out of kitchen and into the hall, about ten feet. I make beeping sounds like a truck backing up, he just looks at me as if he is surprised that I noticed him and keeps backing up.

Oh this darn computer, I wanted to reply to this the other night but the browser freezes. Tonight it is working, finicky computer, worse than a cat.

Malcolm knows the sound of the cabinet where the birdfood is kept. As soon as I open that cabinet Malcolm runs to the parrot cage and barks at poor Oscar. I have to take Malcolm out of the room so the poor bird can eat in peace. I can open any other cabinet in the kitchen, Malcolm pays no attention. He can be outside or in another room. When I open that particular cabinet Malcolm comes running.

"Do you want to know a secret?" is so funny. This is a great topic.

Well as soon as I hit post the browser will freeze so see you all later.

My quirky little man! Murphy hates the vacuum cleaner. Hates!!!! We have to put him in his box or outside to run it. He'll still bark like a fool b/c he can hear it. We had the vacuum sitting in the office, not plugged in, not bothering anyone. Murphy walked in there, lunged at it, growling, and attacked it full on, full force.

He wants to sleep only in his box at bedtime, but has to lounge on Mom and Dad's bed for a little while before or he'll cry and whine when he gets in his box. He will bark like a crazy guy when we let him out on the back patio. He thinks pool toys are to be attacked as well. He'll wait until they float around the pool then attack (meaning get really close to the edge of the pool and bark as loud as he can), wait until they come around again. Rinse and repeat.

He sits pretty when we eat Chinese take out b/c he knows he gets half of my fortune cookie. Same thing when I eat ice cream on a stick - he gets to lick the last bit off the stick.

I have noticed that Kelly doesn't like change either, unless she is the one that made the change. She can move whatever she wants to, but if we move something or add something that is a different story. LOL I have been adding and moving stuff every day because of it.devil.gif LOL I like to see her reaction.

Great topic! I love that they won't come to their name but will to random phrases. Currey has learned "what's that?" as meaning there is something exciting outside the window and will come from anywhere to look out onto the back yard.

Each and every meal, he takes the first few pieces of kibble from the kitchen to the adjacent den - maybe 10 feet - and drops them on the carpet for inspection before eating them and then returning to the bowl to eat the rest.

We have a large skylight in the kitchen and the sun spot moves across the kitchen. From about 11 - 1, there is a large 3x3 ft spot on the floor. On weekends, Currey will flop down in the sun, but somehow manages to position himself exactly in the center of the spot, despite the fact that he could be far off center and still completely in the sun. He'll rest for 20 minutes or so, then move to follow the center of the sun till it runs into the cabinets. I have no idea how he measures the center so perfectly!

They all have some of the same quirks it seems. Like Titan, Kirby will run off if he thinks you want him to come in, even if he is on the porch. Like Ripley, if he sees you watching him he takes off like a bat out of hell barking at some being only he sees. He back up from his food bowls too, although not completely out of the kitchen. He like to lick the spoon I mixed his food with before he will touch it in the bowl (yes, all dishes are sanitized in the dishwasher on scorch the earth cycle!). If you eat, he will try whatever you are eating. Oh, and he gets up every morning by 6 am to go out. He stands at the top step, looks out over his kingdom and then barks all the way down the steps and across the yard in the same pattern every day. He loves his stuffed animals, and although well chewed, he has his favorites that have not been gutted. He "buries:" his bones in the couch and in the closets and under the pillows on the beds, but if you catch him at it he gives you a really dirty look and slinks off to put it somewhere else! He just amazes me every day

I'd be tempted to put the birdfood in another cabinet, just to fool Malcom!

I also LOVE "do you want to know a secret" -- amazing what they will react to.

I get a kick out of how they bark at strange food. Zekey was barking out in the living room the other night after I had made a sandwich. I had dropped a whole loaf of frozen sliced rye bread on the kitchen floor. I THOUGHT i had gotten all the pieces picked up, but no.... Zekey stole one and was barking at it in the living room!
