Hi Guys and Girls,

My wife and I have a 4 year old westie who needed a friend. We love the look of cairns but wanted to get a rescue dog so when this guy popped up we went to get him.

We were told he's a Cairn mix, but I'm not so sure with what or even if he's a cairn at all. He's very very small for being 4 months old. Smaller than our westie was and from what I understand westies and cairns are very very similar. He's got a very long body, and a rather long tail. Very small paws though. I thought maybe he's a Cairn Terrier / Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Mix.

Here's another picture of me holding him, we named him Ollie.

Anyone have any ideas? Look forward to hearing from you all!

OMG he's so cute!!! The first think I thought when I saw him was mixed with Spaniel too.. and that is just a guess from an untrained eye. Maybe the vet can help figure it out too. Also, sometimes the previous owners would like to be contacted to know their pets found a good home, that's what our rescue's owners wanted so I've spoken with her and got/still get info, maybe you could too?

I became a dog person AFTER I got my dog.

He is too cute! We love him! Our Westie is a little tired from dealing with puppy energy! We're taking him to the Vet on Friday just to make sure he's ok. He was a rescue, the people that brought him in found him next to a skate rink so nobody knows!

Wow! It looks like you've got yourself a wonderfully cute, adorable puppy! In spite of the fact that his puppy energy tires your Westie out, it's definitely a plus factor that they get along well. Physically, your Westie might be de-conditioned; up till now, he's not had regular, vigorous "puppy style" workouts. It may take your Westie a bit of time to build up endurance, but he will!

Nobody will probably know for sure what mix your cairn "plus" puppy is, but if it's spaniel, I'll bet he'll be an even sweeter, more cuddly version of a cairn!thumbsup.gif

Wishing you, your wife and Westie much fun and happiness ahead!

What a little darling. So,so cute. i'm not good with dog breeds but if I took a guess I would say some type of Spaniel also. Thanks for the pictures. Keep us posted.

I too think he is just sooooo cute. His eyes are kinda sad looking but I bet when he's playing with the Westie, he is full of you-know-what. Because of his drooping ears, he might be mixed with a spaniel- it's always hard to tell unless you see them in the flesh, so to speak. I had to go back and look at him again, he definitely has a terrier snout and just so darn cute looking. Whatever he is, it won't matter as I'm sure he will fill your home with love and your Westie will be revitalized. Please let us know what the vet has to say - they may have an answer. Welcome to the forum and good luck with your new baby.

What does his bark sound like? If it is clear and loud I would guess Beagle.

Thank you! I just went home and let him out he's such a happy dog and soo cute. He looks very tiny next to the westie.

My best guess at his breeds would be a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel/Cairn mix. You can see a pic here, aside from the coloring he's about the same. Floppy ears longer body, and a distinct almost ferret like run. My friend had a pure King Charles and it ran and moved very similar to Ollie.

My other question is his name Ollie, sounds very similar to Sully and I think I'm confusing my westie. Do any of you multiple dog owners find issues with similar names? Should I change it before he gets used to it?

He hasn't barked much but from what I have heard it was barely a bark, more gruff and it was choppy.

Oh, Oh - you really know how to excite us Ollie! You are precious! Ollie is so lucky to have a home with a big brother. Keep us posted on Sully and Ollie. You will have lots of excitement at your house.

Drip . . . drip . . . . That's the sound of my heart melting. I can see how you couldn't possibly resist those eyes, ears and sweet expression! Whatever he is, he's darling. Congratulations and keep the stories and pics coming!

I can't help but keep going back to the picture as he is just a darling. You may be right on the King/Cairn. I showed hubby the puppy picture and he said - I know what it is "it's a dog." Imagine how I have to live with him. :crybaby: Can't wait to hear what the vet might say - keep us posted and keep those pictures coming.

My first impression was Jack Russell Terrier because of the shape of the face, but the coloring would seem to preclude that, definitely wheaton color. But I am the last person I would trust for breed identification. That is why I responded, just so I can be ignored!! :P

How does his coat feel? Feel any wiry hairs? Or is it super soft feeling? Can you see any signs of a double-coat? So, I'll toss out a new idea on that little cutie...Border Terrier mix?

I think he is very cute but cannot see Cairn in him - to me looks like Border Terrier/Patterdale?

or Border Terrier/Jack Russell - some pups near me that are that and he looks like them!

You might be right here, I got him barking last night and it's three normal barks and then a lonnnnng howl! It's so cute, I took video but I'm waiting for my wife to share the link to her web album with me.

Ah Ha!

My two can't howl, they more or less try to, but it's broken up and not a single clear howl...LOL

His top coat is very wirey, but underneath it is a softer white coat. I'm not sure what he is.

What a little cutie pie!!!!

About the name, yes, go ahead and change it. Does he respond to Ollie? If so, call him Ollie + his new name for a while, and just drop Ollie.

I adopted a 7 yr old Cairn named Sparky. Since he never responded to that name, and it was close to Zekey, I decided to change it. Now Gavin responds to his new name every time. Your Ollie shouldn't have any trouble adjusting to a new name.

I just went an looked up a border, he definitely is built more like a border terrier, in the face and the body. His coloring is lighter though, so maybe he's not a cairn at all!

OMG who cares, he is so darn cute!! What a wonderful addition to your family. He definitely has some terrier in him with the wirey outer coat. I see border in him too.
