poppydog Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 My year old female cairn has been whining sun up to sun down and I'm not sure what it is. A few things changed, my husband is out of town for a week and I also gave her a frosty paw a couple days ago for the first time. The whining started after she had the ice cream, but its been two days and she has not thrown up. She was in heat two months ago, and I'm pretty sure she can't be pregnant. Any ideas? Could she just miss my husband? Or does she want attention? She has never done this before, even as a puppy. Thanks!
Lynn in TN Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 I haven't had a cairn for very long, others on the forum have but judging the way my little pup misses my husband when he goes to work, and the kids when they stay with Mom , I would say she is missing your husband. I could be wrong and you may want to take her to the vet just to make sure. It is better to be safe than sorry. Welcome to the forum! We really ,really like pictures on this site.
pindrop Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 I'm sorry I can't really help you as I don't have an answer. However, whenever hubby leaves the house or whenever we drive down to the local corner store and leave her for two minutes in the car, she cries and cries. Perhaps she is missing your hubby - it's hard to tell. If this was my pup, I would try to distract her when she decides to cry by taking her out for a walk? Hopefully other members will have some suggestions. As Lynn says, we love puppy pictures - and Welcome to the Forum, hope we hear more about your puppy - btw...what is her name? Husband and dog missing ...25 cents reward for dog
finncaraid Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 Welcome!! We need pictures & her name! That makes her officially part of the "pack" here & everyone loves looking at Cairns.-----------When did the whining start? If it started after your husband didn't come home at his regular time & his being away is not a routine thing, it may be that. Especially if she's close to him. She could also be doing watchdog if this isn't a normal event. Has she sometimes whined in the past or is this the first time you've heard her vocalise like that? If she whines on occasion, what was it directed toward? I always first rule out a physical cause for behavior changes. If she was pregnant, she'd be having puppies about now. Is she eating & acting normal otherwise? That's the clue I use to figure things out. Finn, also a just-turned-1-year-old, is a big whiner. Some days more than others. I've learned it's a frustration response when he's anxious to meet or greet someone or something.----------If you think it's your husband's absence, you could use the time to become even better buddies by picking up a bit of the role your husband normally has. Around here, DH is the fun guy. When he's gone, I try to fill in by playing ball/frisbee or chasing rabbits/birds with Finn. It's not the same as "daddy" but he's content with the effort. If you think it's a frosty paws, ignore her. Otherwise, she'll be asking for one all the time. And these young women do so need to watch their figure
Dempsy's Mom Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 You'll know when hubby returns. Poor baby - give him lots of love. Elsie, Max, Meeko & Lori
Jeff N Oscar Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 does she quiet if you rub her and talk to her... like sympathize that daddy is gone and poor baby girl has to wait to get her love but as soon as daddy gets here he's gonna kiss and squeeze da baby till her wittle hearts content... and while you're saying all that in the appropriate baby talk and rubbing her in the most favorite way she likes, does she stop whinning for that? I think if you can distract her by play and if she is still eating and drinking and bathroom duty is the norm, the vote would go to missing daddy. Hope he gets home soon, and be sure to come back and let us know if that was it I became a dog person AFTER I got my dog.
lindasue Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 Don't know what it is; but maybe she's impersonating a teen age girl..... Linda & Pegi
