Lynn in TN Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 The only rug I have in my home is in front of my front door, and Kelly being a puppy just loves to chew on it. Every time I catch her I tell her no and give her one of her toys. Well yesterday she pick up the biggest stuffed toy she has and carried it to the rug. She was just wrestling with it, except the biting on it sounded different. Upon closer inspection the little stinker was just hiding behind the toy and was just a chewing on that rug. I had the hardest time keeping my composer, I told her NO and made her leave the rug, then I went to the bedroom shut the door and laughed my head off. It was so funny and so cute and soooo hard to scold her and If she is that smart I know she picked up on the fact that I was really amused and not mad. How can you make them mind while feeling that way? I knew before I got her that We would have trouble with that. Every time she starts toward the rug now she carries her toy with her.
Hawkeye Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 Yup, the fun begins. I started to read your story and figured she either peed or chewed on the rug. It starts with the rug, but watch out she will go onto something else...like wicker furniture and wires to $$ equipment. Not that I ever had that problem. I can say we have finally got past that stage (1 year later), plus taughtthe hubby to put away the ear buds!
hheldorfer Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 Too funny, Lynn! The Cairn thought process: "Whenever I chew on the rug, I get a toy. I'll just save mommy some trouble by bringing a toy with me when I go to chew on the rug. What a smart Cairn I am!"
ScruffynMag Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 Absolutely typical of the little terror's and like you Lynn, I have to look the other way and laugh. www.cairnterriertalk.co.uk

Dempsy's Mom Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 Kelly, Kelly. Can't wait till you're a teenager! Don't need to teach her tricks - shes got her own. Elsie, Max, Meeko & Lori
Kathryn Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 They do learn young how to be devious, don't they? I learned a little too late, when Allie was just a pup, that the sound of her chewing on her chewie was exactly the same sound as when she chewed on the kitchen baseboards...
pindrop Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 .....giggling here. Yup, the fun begins. They are very devious even at this young age that is why you have to watch them like a hawk. They keep you hopping that's for sure. Diligence is the key - no sleeping on the job. Husband and dog missing ...25 cents reward for dog
tomatosandwich Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 That sounds about right! Aren't they a delight even when they aren't being a delight?!?!
TazTalk Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 What is it about carpet/rug fibers and cairns? Or wood, PKCrossley. Are cairns really termites living in a canine body? Kelly is one smart cookie.
Lynn in TN Posted June 24, 2011 Author Posted June 24, 2011 pkcrossley Oh my! I guess it is a good thing I decorate kinda with primitive style, worn barn wood beat up furniture that type of stuff. Not quiet that chewed up though. I'm sorry I'm laughing so hard it really isn't funny, but you have to laugh at determination like that. Thank you all. I'm glad I'm not the only one that laughs at this stuff. I just can't help it.
Hawkeye Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 I bought chew toys that had threads and knots (like a carpet) but Radar could tell the real thing and preferred the carpet.
Kathryn Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 I read all of this and think - hey, I'd love to visit your houses and get the doggy-destruction tour! We all seem to take these incidences worth a grain of salt. It's more important to own a cairn than to have perfect furniture and carpets....
